Large background picture
I have a large 5' X 3' area I want to print a background picture on. My problem is two fold. To make a print this size with the printer I have I would need to piece it together. At what resolution and size should I make my canvas and secondly how would I print it in pieces to make it fit this area? Any suggestions appreciated!
Neil

Hi Neil,

It kind of depends on what you are wanting to do. What is the size of the source photo? Is it going to be tiled, like you would do in a web page? If so, will that look good enough to meet your requirements? If not, try Wolf Camera. They may have to send it out, but they can do it with good results and they will pay attention to keeping your colors correct. If Color isn't so important, someone like Office max could do it, maybe a bit cheaper.

You could always try the Rasterbator which, despite its dodgy sounding name, is devoted to enlarging images to be printed on walls. It does all the calculations for you - well worth taking a look!

Thanks guys!
Steve, I checked out your link. (Strange name! LOL) I think I'll try that first. It looks like the way I need to go. Do you think a high resolution on photo paper would be wise for a picture of this size?

I have a mental image of a man in coloured woolly hat following a trail of bread crumbs to his doom

Not unless you want to waste a couple of ink cartridges and several packs of paper! You're not going to be looking at this thing close up, I don’t think you need anything like top quality.

However you do it, though, it's going to be expensive. Have you thought of getting it professionally printed? I use an Italian printer, www.pixart.it, for a lot of work. Seems crazy to use a printer in a different country, but they're very good and very cheap. Worth getting a quote, as they do it online.

If you are in the UK, there are numerous places that will print it for you at full size, try your local Prontaprint for example.

It will likely cost £40-£60 but it'll will look amazing.

Either do your artwork at actual size at 200dpi. Or half print size at 300dpi. This will still print with excellent quality and will keep the file size down a bit.
