Layer mask for two layers
I am working on the exercise on page 242, putting things in bottles. I was okay up until step 10, creating a layer mask for two layers. After I control select the distorted brain icon, how does control shift clicking on the layer mask remove the mask? I don't remember learning what control shift on an icon does and I don't understand this step. Then when I control click on the original brain icon, I have lost the selection of the distorted brain, so when I create the Layer Mask Reveal Selection, the mask only includes the original brain, not the distorted one. Is that correct? Please help! |

Re: Layer mask for two layers
Control-clicking on a layer's thumbnail will load that layer as a selection. Holding the Shift key down, as with any selection, will add the new selection to the old one. The problem here is that we want to make a mask that fits two layers, so we need to combine the selections. |

Re: Layer mask for two layers
If adding Shift adds to the selection, then how does Control Shift clicking on the distorted brain's mask subtract the mask? Then, the next step says to only Control click on the original brain layer icon to add that to the selection. It does not add it for me even if I hold down Shift at the same time. It replaces my distorted brain selection with a selection of the original brain. My Layer Mask Reveal Selection only uses the last thing I selected, the original brain. I lose the selection of the distorted brain. Hope I am asking this so it makes sense! |

Re: Layer mask for two layers
Hmmm... I'll have to take another look at this. I wrote that tutorial eight years ago, and it's hard to remember exactly what stage it's at when! Possible, of course, that I got my Shift and Alt confused... |

Re: Layer mask for two layers
I am using the 4th edition of the book, page 243, Hot Tip sidebar. It is more likely that I am the confused one! Thanks so much! |
