Link the smart object and its layer mask in CS3?
Mish
You added this question to another topic and I thought it may become lost, so I've started a new subject. Hope you don't mind.

I'm new to CS3 and have not used smart objects to any great degree. They seem to be like an editable layer which sits in the background and which calls on the original file information when edits are made. For this reason you can expand and contract the layer quite severely without loss of quality.

Try this- duplicate the background twice and set one of the copies as a SO. Go to Free Transform and shrink both layers equally and severely. Commit the change and repeat but this time expand back to 100%. Now compare the difference - amazing!

You seem to be right in that there is no link in the layers pallette for the SO mask. However, if you click on edit contents from the drop down menu, this then opens up the SO itself and you'll see that the mask does have a link. Mask an area and move the SO with the move tool and when you save the changes and return to the original file, you'll see that any movement in the SO layer and it's mask has been recorded.
