[moved from link-fest] Resolution for different page sizes? - Please help!
Hi, I'm going to be teaching some students how to use Photoshop CS3 next week, but the one issue I find difficult to come to terms with, is resolution when opening new documents. I normally use 300 pixels/inch for A4 documents, which has always worked well for me, but I don't want to advise my students of this until I know that that I'm correct! Also, is 300 pixels/inch a good resolution for A1 prints? I'd really appreciate anyone's help with this as I'm really struggling to find an answer. [Oh, and brilliant book for Photoshop CS3, thanks so much Steve. Haven't been able to put it down!!] Thanks, Jade. |

Hello! The resolution (300dpi or other) is mostly related to the medium on which you will print your work. For Web (monitor display) that is why it is recommended to use 72 dpi as it is the resolution range a monitor can show. For printing, we always see/hear 300dpi but in fact it depends on the printing process. Laser printers in the old days were set to 300 dpi, hence the current trend. It turns out that most inkjet printers can work real well with a 240 dpi resolution (I print A3 photos at that resolution on a Canon Pixma 9000Pro, a photo inkjet printer). The actual drops of ink are way smaller then that (way smaller then 300 dpi for that matter) and it is the software that compensates. Newsprint is around 150 dpi I believe. Ever notice those big advertisement that you see the dots when you're up close? They don't need a big resolution as the readers are pretty far away to look at the image and don't see the dots. The other thing is that the bigger the resolution, the bigger the filesize. At work we actually print Photoshop renders at 150 dpi on A size paper and it looks great from 1 meter away and the filesize stays manageable. Hope this helps! _________________ |

nicely explained Pierre XD when i open an A4 document i set the resolution to 300 dpi but only if the final result needs to be in high quality (like an advertisement for a magazine) but if it`s going to be printed in a inkjet i work with 200. Also i check at the size of the document, if it is too high i tend to decrease the resolution..for example when i`m designing a banner (100 x 200 cm) i start with 80 dpi, if the size is too big i go to 72...it depends not only on the size of the final printing but also on the material it`s meant to be printed. this are asome "rules" that i use for my work: A4 - 300 dpi A3 - 280 dpi A2 - 200 dpi those values work when printed on bond and couche paper for example HTH! |
