Photoshop and stacks
Hello, I would really appreciate any help that anyone could give me on this problem, it may be more of an Apple problem but can't find any help on their site so thought maybe someone here (who obviously knows a lot more about it than I do could help)
Have got Leopard, all updated, with some psd files in a folder on my stacks. When I go to view them in stacks as cover flow they are all very pixelated, any pictures not put into photoshop view fine, (all are fine when I go into Quick Look). A picture I downloaded from Steve's new book:Film Noir psd views well as does a photo from iPhoto and a png.
Are there some settings that I need to change?
I did notice that some of them that had profiles attached did not view properly: but not all of them!
Very grateful for any help on this.

Don't know anything about Mac OS, but I understand Windows OS has not been able to open .psd files since PS 7.

Perhaps Leopard has similar problems?

Perhaps Google that query?

Re: Photoshop and stacks
Just a guess. Is it because Leopard cannot read the actual PSD file but can see the embedded small thumbnail and that is what it shows?

I have a PowerBook G4 with Leopard but not used it in so long. I should boot it up and see how mine look.

EDIT:

I see your problem. I have a folder with two PSD files in it. They both look good in the view you are referring to (Sorry I forgot what it's called I am not a Mac person)
I just loaded one and saved it back under another name and this new file looks very rough and pixelated. I do not know what has changed. It can't be a setting in Leopard if two PSDs side by side that should be identical display differently.

EDIT2. The only difference I can think of is. The original PSD file was created in Photoshop CS3 windows. That displays nicely. It was when I loaded in the MAC CS3 and saved it it went funny.

EDIT 3. The good file that went bad after saving in mac version of PS CS3 was transferred to the PC and loaded and re saved. Transferred back to the Mac and it displays nice again. Load that and re save on the Mac PS CS3 and it's rough as old boots again.

Conclusion: Something odd with Mac Photoshop CS3

Re: Photoshop and stacks
Thanks for the reply Paul, I think it is something I have got wrong on the computer, but I don't know what. Will have to talk to an Apple person on Monday. Even some images of programmes have gone pixelated now, but not when I look back to "Last Week"
Dave or Gordon, I need your help!

Re: Photoshop and stacks
Sorry Deborah - can't help with this one at the moment as I am working with a laptop that has MAC 10.4 on it and I'm around 800 miles from my MAC with stacks.

I would be more than interested to know the outcome. I don't know how a setting in the OS can make two seemingly identical PSD files look differently side by side.

I thought stacks were what you got when you hover over an icon in the tray bit at the bottom and multiple files "spring" up. Cover flow is just a method of displaying the contents of a folder/directory.

EDIT. It looks like Cover Flow needs preview files of 512x512 so that it can display them smoothly. Photoshop doesn't create ones large enough to look good. One way around it is to go into Prefs->File Handling in photoshop and set it to never save previews. Now when coverflow needs to display the preview and can't find one, it will create one itself at the resolution it needs and that will look good. I tried it and it works.

I do not know of an easy way to remove these small previews other than loading the files into photoshop and saving them again once you have changed that setting in the preferences.

Re: Photoshop and stacks
Well, I have been on the phone to Apple for 2 hours, with lots of testing: and it has them stumped, so am now waiting for an email from them.
Just to reiterate, any psd files and any in folders, when viewed in cover flow are very pixellated, but if I view them as yesterday, last week or all images, again in cover flow they are fine.
We even tried saving a psd to a jpeg to see if that worked, but it was still pixelated, seems to be any file that has been in CS3!
If anyone else has had this problem I would like to hear from you.

Re: Photoshop and stacks
You were right about 512x512 Paul. An easy way to get rid of the small previews without opening all the pictures in photoshop is go to Get Info, click on the small preview in the top left hand corner and delete. It displays fine in cover flow, problem is when you search for a file in photoshop, while in list view all you get is photoshop logo! All okay in other views though.
Right on to the Friday Challenge.
And thank you Paul.

Re: Photoshop and stacks
Hello, yes this old chestnut again!
Was just looking at cover flow again and I noticed that the images I have from the disc of Art & Design display clearly. But they are called Photoshop Image, whereas mine are all called Photoshop File. Could anyone be bothered to explain the difference, and what I can do?
