Displacement Maps
Help!!
I'm trying to complete the Displacement Maps Ch 12, PP 298-301.
HTCIPS CS2 3rd Edn.
I'm following the instructions but can't get it to work. I get the the displace diologue box, select the greyscale image I've already saved. Yet when I use the pre installed PS maps, it works?!
This application seems very useful, so I'd like to master it.
If anyone has experienced the same problems and can help me out I'd be grateful.
Also Can't find CD image for Ch 12 Pages 314-315, are they anywhere on the site?
Thanks

Re: Displacement Maps
Thanks for pointing that out again, Alan/rufus - I've now included the tip in the book.

Hank, you're right - I hadn't included the files for the Illustrator/Photoshop example you refer to. I'd meant to take the CD icon off those pages. You're the first person ever to ask for the images!

You can download the psd file here.

Re: Displacement Maps
Hi All, thanks ever so much for getting back so quickly.
Have downloaded file Steve. I think this Forum site is really brill, everyone seems part of a comunity with a common interest in PS, the help from other contributors is priceless, especially for someone like me who is very much on the lower part of the learning curve.
Rufus, thanks for your help, I've tried youre suggestion and nothing happens unfortunately. I go to Filters>Distort>Displace... Set the values as per book, the "Choose a Dsplacement Map" dialogue box opens, I select the previously prepared greyscale map, click "Open" and nothing happens!
If I select maps fron those shipped with PS it works, of course, not with the map I made!!!

Re: Displacement Maps
Hank,

The settings Rufus describes change the way files are saved, not the way they're opened. So if you make those changes and then try saving the Displacement Map file once again, you should find it works this time.

Alternatively, save the map in a new document as a flattened grayscale TIFF file, and this should always work.

Glad you're enjoying the forum. Make full use of us!

Re: Displacement Maps
Yippee!!!!
It works!
Did all that, but do you know what? I made all the changes and it still didn't work, so I saved the map on the desktop instead of being with all the other lesson files, (which had a fairly long path).
I don't think PS likes long paths in the filename when using maps etc - i.e.) keep it short!
By the way Steve, Displacement Map only likes *.PSD format, doesn't like TIFF.
Also I went straight to Image>mode>greyscale>flatten>save. And didn't do Ctrl+Shif+U first.

Tried a few more as well, what a great filter to make things look realistic1 It's worth noting that having three text layers above the wood looked OK as well. From top to bottom: Colour Blend @ 80%,Multiply @ 15%, Overlay @ 60%. I tried messing around with other variations as well, they might look OK with other blends.

Thanks again!

Don't go thinking it's the last time you hear from me either!

Regards

Hank

Re: Displacement Maps
Thanks for your help, in fact it's me who's been doing it incorrectly. The way I have been creating the map!
The point that I've been Greyscaling / flattening the image. Everything's working OK now.
Seem to have got bogged down in a particular procedure, lessons learned, as politicians say!
Thanks again
Hank
