Fonts
Steve

In the A&D book, you provide us with some fonts to download. Does Photoshop take the fonts from Windows, or does it have some of its own?

I notice there are some 'read me' files within the fonts folder on the CD and have been reluctant to copy these to the windows fonts folder in case they cause issues?

Re: Fonts
Fonts are system-wide, rather than being built into an application (on the Mac, anyway - I assume it's the same in Windows, but no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

The 'read me' files are simply text files that accompany the fonts, as requested by the font designers. No malware there!

Re: Fonts
Quick tip:

Having around 8000 fonts can cause Photoshop to take 20 mins to open up the font list...

As I learnt from experiences

Re: Fonts
Fonts are part of the system on Windows too. On Windows, the fonts are typically stored in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Fonts"

The readme folders won't cause problems in the system folder, since windows determines which are font files by looking at the file extension. It is however considered to be good practice to only place actual font files in that folder.

Re: Fonts
And to take Alex's point a little further it is a good idea to use a font utility such as Suitcase to store your fonts if you have lots of them then you just open them from there when you need them. That way you are not storing your fonts in the application so it becomes faster.

When transferring your fonts into, say, Suitcase, you shouldn't transfer the fonts which the application uses within itself; those should be left in their original folder.
