Urgent scratch disc help needed
Photoshop says when I open it (sometimes) that my (only) scratch disc is nearly full - defragging doesn't help and I cannot make top nor tail of instructions on how to make an alternative scratch disc. Will it help if I bin loads of old images cluttering up the place ? Argh! _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Re: Urgent scratch disc help needed
Good morning Josephine, A scratch disc is either a completely empty disc or a partition of a disc which Photoshop uses in lieu of memory to allow temporary storage of information on a file. You should remove ALL files from the scratch disc so that Photoshop can make best use of it. Never save anything to your scratch disc. Don't mistake a scratch disc for a 'normal' disc where you would save files. Gordon _________________ Maturity is knowing when and where to be immature |

You should keep your scratch disk as clean as possible - by which I mean, don't clutter it up with images! Ideally, you'd have a separate disk partition of, say, 10Gb with NOTHING ELSE ON IT reserved exclusively for Photoshop's use. Of course that isn't possible now you've filled it up. But is it a separate drive? Are you able to take the photos off and archive them onto DVD, erase the disk, and then resist the temptation to put them back on again? |

Re: Urgent scratch disc help needed
As hard drives are so cheap these days it might be a good idea to purchase a small one and use that as your scratch disc. if you end up buying a bigger one then just partition it and allocate the partition as your scratch drive. I have a 30 Gb scratch disc to cover all eventualities but that is a little overkill. When you plug it in just go to Photoshop preferences 'memory and scratch drives' and designate that new disc as your main scratch drive. Then completely forget that you own that drive for the purposes of saving things. _________________ The meek shall inherit the Earth if that's ok with the rest of you. |

Agree Gordon. I bought a 500GB external drive to store photos etc, so as to leave the 160GB drive in the computer virtually free for PS to use. As you say, they are so cheap now. Nick |

Ideally you would have the scratch disk on a drive separate from the program and OS. You only have one head per disk so you have less conflicts that way. |

Re: Urgent scratch disc help needed
Thank you but I am none the wiser . Seperate drive ? Designate the new disc ?? Allocate the partition ???
When I save I just save to a file in "my documents" - how do I know when I am saving to the scratch disc and how do I stop it ? And how do I empty it - or can't I
I have a very big memory stick that I save onto as a back up to the hard disc if that helps. You will have to explain this in fairy footsteps guys _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

I have a feeling that Gordon has answered all your questions in a personal message. Just wanted to say the external drives tend to be slower, so it's better to partition off part of you main disk for PS scratch. I always do that and use Drive D for that purpose. Nothing else goes on there. On my laptop its 15GB. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |
