pictures with backgrounds
How can I save a picture with out a background? every time I cut out a picture in photoshop & save it as a .jpg in order to use it later, it always saves with a white background. Is it possible to cut out a pic in photoshop and save it with out a white background or any background at all?

Thank you so much for your help

Re: pictures with backgrounds
When you save an image as a JPEG it always flattens it (adds a white background) because the .jpg format doesn't support transparency. To save with no background you have four options:

.psd is the obvious choice, as this will save as a native Photoshop document. File sizes are large, however.

.tif: TIFF files with transparency (there's an option when you save the file) are smaller than Photoshop docs, but not much. TIFFs can be made smaller by using JPEG compression within them, but you can't use this kind of compression when you have transparency (of course) because JPEGs don't support transparency. Uh...

.png is the Portable Network Graphic format, which results in smaller file sizes than TIFFs. It's not widely used for saving graphics but it should be, because it's a lossless format that works very well.

.jpf is the JPEG2000 format. This is excellent: transparency, very high quality images, tiny file sizes. So where's the catch? The JPEG2000 reader isn't installed in Photoshop by default, which means you need to install it from the original installation disks. But it's an excellent option. The cutout images on thefullmontage are saved in this format, because it's fast and high quality.

Phew!
