Shape manipulation using Dodge and Burn
Okay, so here is a photograph I took using my less than £100 camera from Tesco,

Say I was to make a new layer, make a big patch of solid 50% grey paint over the spare DVD's and paper with a peice of paper with numbers on it and wanted to use the Dodge and Burn tools to make it appear as if these objects were poking through. As we all know, the Dodge and Burn tools make many uses and I have recently discovered that without it, Photoshop wouldn't be taken seriously. Anyway, here's the picture, how do I go about doing this?

Edit: I'm such an idiot, I forgot the Lloyds card and Bobbles were there and I know this'll just make it harder..

Re: Shape manipulation using Dodge and Burn
I'm having some difficultly understanding excatly what you want to achieve but if you want to paint some dodge and burn over these objects you mention then:

1. create a new layer above picture
2. make a selection of the objects and in the new empty layer fill this selection with 50% gray.
3. Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Hard Light and straight away the gray will turn invisible.
4. Use Dodge and Burn on the new layer and only the highlights and shadows will show.

If however, you are trying to Emboss these objects:

1. Make a selection of the objects on the Picture's layer.
2. Create a New Layer Via Copy (Ctrl)+(J)
3. Filter>Stylize>Emboss...
4. Enter the setting you like.

Hope that helps,
Becky

Glad that I could help - but which one was the effect you wanted?

Re: Shape manipulation using Dodge and Burn
I was just expanding on making liquid using Plastic Wrap, I needed the shadows of the objects poking through so I could make the liquid drip off the sides and so on
