When you create a new layer, you can press the Alt/Option key to make PS ask you for a name.

Adding Alt/Option when PASTING doesn't do this.

Is there any way to force PS CS4 to ask you for a name when you paste? A different key combination?

I am creating some complex actions for a project at work and I need to paste up to 22 variations of an image into a single file, some of which I need to refer back to in the action. I'd rather give them names than rely on the layers always being called the default "Layer" and a number. (Just in case I edit my template and throw all the numbering out)

I know I can rename the layers in the action immediately after pasting, but if there is a better way ...

There's no shortcut key to do this automatically, sadly. I've been asking Adobe for years to enable naming via drag and drop - so if you drag a background from, say, an image called Sky into your montage, it will be named "sky" rather than "layer XX". No luck yet.

But with actions, surely you can just build in a rename as part of the action? Or am I missing something?

No, your not missing anything.

That is what I have done. I rename it as soon as I paste it while it's still the current layer so that I don't loose track of it, but I thought there might be a more elegant way.

I don't like to click twice on anything if I can do it another way by clicking once. What I lack in creativity I try to make up for keyboard shortcuts.

I've spent my Easter weekend going through a Lynda.com Photoshop Power Shortcuts DVD. It's that that made me think there must be a better/proper way.
