					Outer Glow
Excuse me if this nothing to do with the books but I can't seem to get any sense elsewhere. I would have come here first, but I thought as it was not specifically to do with a book, I would leave it to the last resort. My problem concerns a document with a lot of text and photo layers. One text layer which has a company name on, I have used Layer Styles on, part of which I have used an Outer Glow. The colour is white and it is just enough to make the Red letter stand out from the background, which is quite dark stonework. I couldn't use the Stroke because I needed that to be in Black because the typeface I am using EDO, looked better with the black stroke. OK, so all looked good and basically finished but, as soon as I flattened all the layers and saved as a jpg ready for the printers, the white Outer Glow line vanished! As soon as I Undid the flattening, it re-appeared. I tried saving the files in Groups, before Merging...same problem vanishing Glow. It seems that as soon as I flatten all the layers the Outer Glow layer style disappears. All the other attributes of the layer style - Colour Overlay, Drop Shadow etc - remain intact Where am I going wrong please? _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Hi Mark I created the attached file and you'll see that both a shape created with the marquee and type (not rasterised), have retained an outer glow layer style. I remember creating an image some time ago and the same thing happened to me. It could be something to do with the blend mode of the style, the blend on this image was screen. When I flattened the image, the glow did seem to condense slightly, so if the glow was very small, it could just disappear?? Was the glow present when you flattened, i.e. did you only find it has disappeared when you saved as JPEG? Try creating a new layer above the type and merge the type with its style onto the new layer. This is likely to double the glow effect, so ensure the original layer is turned off. Clutching at straws really Mark. Nick |

					Re: Outer Glow
Try merging the text layer with a new blank layer below it, then merge the rest of the layers. Merging the text layer with a blank layer should flatten the text layer without effecting the outer glow. You might want to copy the text layer before you do anything in case something goes bad. Maybe even create a smart object. That way you can still edit the text... |

Thanks Steve M and Nick, tried your suggestions and still no joy unfortunately. Steve C, what is the best method for me to attach the file. If I send it in psd format so that you can see all the layers etc, it's about 27MB. Thanks everyone your help is greatly appreciated. hi Mark I remember it happened to me once years ago...as Nick suggests, it might have to do with the Blend mode, anyway since you are looking for the flattened version..why donīt you try merging all the layers at the top? (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E) and if that fails, something that has helped me countless times> the goold old ScreenCap, never fails

Mark, Since all we're interested in here is how the layer effects work, the file doesn't need to be big or complex. Try cropping it down to a small section, and deleting unwanted layers. Mind you, that still wouldn't get it small enough to post here. Can you upload it to a sharing site? Perhaps to YouSendIt, and then use my email address as the recipient? |

					Re: Outer Glow
Mark, OK, got the file - thanks. When you look at the file at 33.3%, the size that fits in my monitor, then it does indeed appear that the glow reduces in size when the image is flattened. However, when you zoom in to 100%, it's apparent that the glow isn't nearly as large as it seems when zoomed out. This is obviously a redraw issue, with Photoshop showing the glow at the smaller size to be much larger than it really is. Zoom in to 100%, set the glow as you want it, and you should find that when the document is flattened it appears exactly the same as it did before flattening. Steve |

					Re: Outer Glow
Did you try merging a copy of all the layers instead of just flattening all of the layers. Sometimes it helps to see what might be happening without committing to the original layers. Shift+Cmd(Ctl)+Option(Alt)+E. Just a thought... |
