Refine edge
100% PS - chapter 7 - #2: "...open the Refine Edge dialog." I'd love to, but I don't know where it is. Using PS 7 - can anyone help me out here? It's probably right under my nose.................Joey |

Re: Refine edge
Refine Edge was introduced with a later version, possibly CS2 / CS3, so I'm afraid you're stuck with good old feathering and channel masking. Nick |

Re: Refine edge
Joey, Refine Edge is a later feature in CS4/CS5. Its okay though you can achieve the similar results with PS7 here, just not as quick. Refine Edge is modifying the selection. I think in this case you can quite easily achieve similar result using Selection tool options, as I guess you and others may already know. With the selection active: 1/Use Select>Modify>Smooth. 2/Use Select>Modify>Feather. 3/Use Select>Modify>Contract. Not sure how to emulate Radius adjustment, but small point. The big advantage of CS4 is can make all these adjustments all at the same time and see the results in various modes, in realtime, as you tune the options. More powerfully you could use Alpha channels and edit an alpha channel for the section using most of the PS tools to create a modified selection, but not necessary in this case! Trevor update:. same as Nick, I'd started and posted before saw his post. I'd forgot/not sure it was in CS2 |

Re: Refine edge
Once you've created the mask using the techniques Trevor has described, you can try blurring the mask by a small amount and then apply levels using the gamma slider, which will tighten / loosen the edge. Best to practice on another image first. Nick |

Re: Refine edge
Hey Luis - I was back-tracking and found advice you gave to Debra Morley WAY back in 2010 (4-27) regarding the very thing I've been struggling with. As usual, your suggestions were right on the money and helped me tremendously! Almost a year later, thank you! Joey |

Re: Refine edge
chapter 7 - #5: "...........use the IMAGE WARP mode of Free Transform to apply a Bulge distortion." I don't seem to have "Image Warp" under the Free Transform. Is this, again, something that PS 7 doesn't have? If no, any suggestions what I'm doing wrong.........if yes, any suggestions how I might accomplish this with what I have? Appreciate any help. Joey |

Re: Refine edge
You're right, sadly - Image Warp didn't make an appearance until after PS7. To apply the Bulge effect, you could try using the Spherize filter instead. Less controllable, but you will get a similar effect. For more complex deformations, try the Liquify filter. ...or you could always treat yourself to CS5, it really is very good! |

Re: Refine edge
After trying everything in the Distort filter, I ended up doing most of it manually, then gave it lots of bevel/emboss and color to hide my flaws. Results not too bad..........I can live with 'em. LOVED doing the bubbles - how easy were they??? Thanks for the advice......Joey ![]() |

Re: Refine edge
Well, that looks good! And the bubbles are fun, aren’t they. |
