layer masks 2: soft edges
Steve,
I am working on layer masks 2: soft edges.
I am running into a couple of problems :
After applying the gradient, two things occur which I am puzzled about.
A- The horizon line of the field raises a bit. Is that supposed to happen ?
I think maybe yes, because it is mentioned that " Even raising the horizon line by deleting a section of sky would look like a poor montage".
Is this lesson somehow set to do this automatically somehow ? This would not be a normal occurrence however when working on a photo.
B- on the cloud layer, after applying the gradient, the checkered background layer is coming through. How can I correct this.
I suspect there may be some problem perhaps with the DVD, as lesson content aware scaling 2, page 56 was not represented on the disc as the disc sign on page 57 indicated it should be.
BAsically, I am quite fond of this book, as I have learned quite a few techniques.
I am sending you this by e-mail because I am not certain I would be sending it properly through the readers forum
Herb

Re: layer masks 2: soft edges
Hello Herb,
Steve tends not to post at the weekends so maybe I can help.
A - The true horizon was hidden by the cloud layer above it, so in effect when you apply the layer mask to the cloud, you are putting the horizon back to its correct place.
B - With your layer mask it sounds like you have dragged the gradient too far, which is why you are getting the chequerboard. (Does your layer mask look the same as the small image on page 73)? Either select the layer mask and move it down, or fill the mask with white and try the gradient again.
Re Content -Aware Scaling no 58 (not 56), I have 3 images on the DVD, so maybe it is your DVD.
Hope this helps.

Re: layer masks 2: soft edges
Deborah,

This man contacted me a couple of times by email, and we figured out he was using the CS4 version of the book (which is why the numbers don't match up).

I answered his questions, and recreated the tutorial image he couldn't find and emailed it to him. I also twice asked him to post a message here, thanking you for having taken the trouble to answer his questions. As you can see, he hasn't bothered to reply here. He also hasn't replied to my email containing the tutorial file.

You know, I just don't get it. People ask for help, you give them as much help as you're able to offer, and then they don't acknowledge it. It makes no sense to me.

I think that's what makes Forum members so special - their willingness to help and to contribute.

Hello Steve,
I have just checked my Spam with my email provider, and Herb had sent me a private message thanking me on the 28th. The layer mask problem worked.

Ah. So it was just a failure to understand the forum protocol. Herb, I stand corrected.

Steve,
it took me awhile to understand the workings of this site, and I am still not certain I have it down pat. In all my years with computers, I never got into these forums, so this was all completely unfamiliar to me.
I was a bit hurt to read your first e-mail. I was not certain that I was in fact responding correctly, and I DID want to be able to thank Deborah for taking the time to assist me in this problem.
I was relieved to read further that you understood that it was not a matter of being ungrateful, but just my not understanding how to operate within the site. Believe me. I am not the kind of person you described in your first e-mail. The type of person you described, irritates me also.
Thanking you, and Deborah again,
Herb

In my previous post, I failed to mention that I received your e-mail containing the zip file with the missing photos for the lesson where it was lacking. I thought I mentioned that I was on CS4, but obviously I hadn't.
Thanks for helping me with this issue.
Herb
