Drawing lines on Google map
Having written a young person's novel about underground tunnels of 'Britaian's Secret Army' I would like to draw a line on a map i have copied from Google to a) show the underground route and
b) to write on the map.
I have tried using the pen tool on a layer; flattened and saved but when i open the JPG up there is no line to be seen.
What am i doing wrong please?

I supposse you're a beginner concerning Photoshop. And now you'll have to learn a very complicated program to draw some simple lines. If I were you, I'd use a simpel program for this simple job: the free FastStone Viewer (here to download) http://www.faststone.org/index.htm
Load the picture in FastStone and hit the D-key.
Succes with this secret tunnels!

Re: Drawing lines on Google map
Elona,

I tried it and not a problem. I created jpeg from google earth screen capture. Opened in PS. Created new layer, used the pen tool to create path (of the track) and stroked the path (with brush). Seems to work ok for me. Important to Stroke Path in Path tab options

Maybe we are doing something different or I missed something.

Re: Drawing lines on Google map
Elona,

Drawing a line with the Pen tool marks a path, but doesn't then do anything with that path. Assuming you're not using CS6, you need to apply a stroke to that path.

Choose a hard-edged brush of the size you want the line to be, then the foreground colour you want. (To be safe, make a new layer first.) With the path visible, press Enter and the path will be stroked with that brush.

Writing on the map is simply a matter of using the Text tool - create your text and move it where you want it.

However, I would counsel you to be especially careful when using Google maps, especially in printed publications. They're heavily copyrighted, not just by Google but by the companies that took the satellite photographs, and you run the risk of being pursued in the courts if you publish them without permission.

Thank you one and all - perhaps i should heed Steve's caution about using a printed map and try to create my own map scheme and then the drawing of a tunnel route wont be a problem.
I am using CS3.5 extended and i will try out the Stroke Path tip for interest.
Elona.

Elona,

Sorry I was going to mention Copyright too as know a big issue. Plenty of lawyers ready. I know from my patents experience. I work on patents.

Steve posted an interesting summary how to approach it from copyright perspective. (Copyright not same as patents). According to me, if you use anyone's and publish anyone's work beyond personal use you are breaching the laws. But Steve's post much more informative.

Each country different.

The pen tool is just the same in CS3 and many versions before.

Many can help you on any issue here. Just post!
