Unable to fill new layer/selection with colour
Recently I have been unable to fill a new layer with a colour unless I use the paint bucket. The same applies to selections. Neither Shift+F5 nor Edit > Fill result in a Fill. I just have a transparent layer. The History shows a Fill.

Clearly I have altered something but I am at a loss to know what. Can anyone cast any light on this bizarre problem?

I am using CS5, the PC version

Thanks

Puffin have you tried Alt + Backspace?

Maybe this will work:
Configuration»Country & Language»Keyboards»Change keyboards»Advanced»No hotkeys.
This is my translation from my own Windows (7) version, which is Dutch.

If you are still having problems you might try posting a screenshot so that we can see what is going. Is your layer locked or unlocked?

Check that the box marked 'preserve transparency' in the fill dialog box is not ticked

Thanks, folks.

Just got in from a day at the sailing club - I will try your suggestions and will report back.

Re: Unable to fill new layer/selection with colour
Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees!

I was just setting things up for a screen shot when I looked carefully at the Fill box - and there it was - a tick in Preserve transparency. Funnily enough you can't fill a transparent layer with colour if that is ticked! (For some reason I had 'read' Ben's suggestion as referring to the Lock transparency button, hence the screen shot set-up.)

I vaguely recall doing a tutorial recently which required me to use a pattern and to tick the Preserve transparency box. Pity I didn't untick it afterwards.

Thank you all for your help it is much appreciated
