new image from various other images
Hi, I am completely new to the world of Photoshop and need some advice on the best way of creating an image from bits of other images. For example, I want to create a person by using legs from one image, the body from another, the head from another etc etc I am using CS6. what is the best way to do this? Thanks in advance for any help or advice given |

Hi, Fugley's Dad. I highly recommend a popular book called "How to cheat in Photoshop CS6" by Steve Caplin. The book explains at length how to solve this and many other montage problems, and is currently selling on amazon.co.uk at £23.79 |

Hi Fugley's Dad, I totally agree with Mariner. This book will take you through most things that Photoshop can do. The two main pieces of advice I can give is to master each section in turn and try not to get too far ahead of yourself; the other, most important advice is to persevere. A programme as complex as Photoshop can take a while to understand and master but I can guarantee that the first time you remove your son's head and replace it with the cat's you will have a terrific smile on your face. Surgical removal of the smile may be required but, eventually, you will be able to remove it in a less radical way - in Photoshop. Set yourself a series of small projects with a variety of photographs and understand the selection tools and you'll be away. ...and don't forget to ask here for help; we all started the same way, once. Hi Fugley's Dad, I agree with everything said above. Steve's book will be invaluable resource to help you through the process of creating realistic looking montages in photoshop. To undertake the kind of montages you want you will likely need to understand: Creation and interraction of layers Quick selection Lasso selection Free transform Masking Blend modes Adjustment layers Filters and quite possibly: The pen tool Alpha channels Colour Channels Layer effects These terms will all be alien to you at the moment but a good book to take you through step-by-step, some tutorial videos (with the book and also online via Google) and help from us forum members when you get stuck on a particular aspect and some trial and error and you will soon be flying. _________________ "We're going to need a bigger boat!" |

I also agree with everything said. I started with PS7. To busy and weird not intuitive for a year. Then pushed it and got great results, both with montage, photography and art. Well that's my opinion. Once you practise it can go very fast. Providing no interruptions as I found out the other week. I might add to the list PC CTRL/Z to remove your last change (CMD/Z Mac). More powerful is History tool. In the preference you need to set the number of steps you might want to reserve. I think default 20. This will whack your memory. I have it at about 40, just me. I love Pen Tool, some don't, but with History you can go back. I only have CS5-Extended, but what a lot of changes from CS3 that help with speed. If you want to be pure you have to go back basics with channels, masks, alpha channels and paths as BigVern listed above. Colour balance difficult. As Vern said, people here to help when we can. |

Thanks for all the promotion, guys, but I suspect Fugley's Dad is one of those people who posts a question and then never looks to see if there are any replies. |

Re: new image from various other images
OK, thanks for the replies - I ordered the book last week which is how I came across this forum so I will start working my way through it. As for the post from Steve Caplin (site owner/author) - I really am sorry I haven't been back to see if there are any replies before now but I only posted the question what, 6 days ago - I was in hospital for 4 of the 6 days for a throat operation. So please can you forgive me for not checking the post sooner because I didn't have internet access on the ward - something I will bring up with the hospital when I go back for a check up. I also find it astonishing that the site owner/author would put a reply comment like that after such a short period of time after the initial post - its not like I posted the question a ridiculously long time ago (like a week ............). To be honest I take all responsibility because its my fault that I didn't read all the T&C's for posting here otherwise I would have seen the bit where it says that "if you post a question, by the law of Steve Caplin, you have to check back every 5 mins to see the replies otherwise you will get a smart arse reply" . So as I said, I will start working my way through the book hopefully I will be able to figure out what I want to do along with some other stuff. P.S. I beg forgiveness in advance if I don't keep checking on this or any other thread I post (if I bother again) every 5 mins as I may be doing something else but I will try to reply to comments etc in a timely fashion in the future. |

Hi fugleys dad, just to say there are quite a few occasions when people post a question, others on the forum reply (having spent time working on the relevant problem) and then nothing. Don't be harsh, enjoy the book and post questions, we will help when we can, as long as we know the answer. Steve tends not to be on the site at weekends, as otherwise I am sure he would have replied to your comments by now. Hope you are fully recovered. |

Deborah, Thanks, I will use and work through the book but it seemed a bit of a harsh comment to make when it was less than a week ago that I asked the question. I am completely new to this so was just looking for some pointers so I could start messing around. Now that I have a few weeks off work to recover I will have time to play and experiment. |

Oh! I'd say don't worry Fugleys Dad. More important I trust your throat operation went well? Not connected, but good friend of mine had a polyp remove from mouth Friday. We could not share a few beers as planned. No way go to pub after that. I hope his results are good. The book is very helpful. I've never done all steps. A point of reference/inspiration for me. FYI, Steve will not respond over the weekend. Family life etc demarcate on that as I understand. People on the Forum will always try to help you, but I travel a lot. Trevor P |

"FYI, Steve will not respond over the weekend. Family life etc demarcate on that as I understand" - yet he makes those remarks about others without knowing the reasons why. Oh well, time to have play and see what I can come up with |

Re: new image from various other images
"play and experiment" is the best way. Some of the videos are the best help and I think Steve archived many on the DVD. You need time. I was so busy at start, could not "get the motor running, head out on the highway" (Stefan Wolf) Then you are off..... Take your time, its not intuitive, but with CS6 gives you much better start than me. Just enjoy! Its not easy, but again, people here to help. |
