Posting Images
Hi all

The images I've posted for challenges seem to appear smaller than those submitted by others. It's been so long I'd forgotten how to do it.

My normal method is to create a new hi-res file, normally 9 x 6 inches at 300 ppi and then paste Steve's image into it. I convert it to a smart object and then transform as required.

When the Psd file is completed, it's saved in that format and I then save it as a Tiff copy without layers, so I have a hi-res original and I'm not saving a Jpeg from a Jpeg.

The Tiff is then brought back into PS and I go to image - image size and change the resolution to 72 ppi leaving the dimensions the same i.e. 9 x 6 in.

Once resized, I then go to export - save for web legacy and then adjust the file size to as close as 99 kb as possible and then save that for posting. The Tiff file is then closed without saving changes.

It's interesting that images in portrait format appear larger?

Can anyone help me with the method you use, or am I on the right lines?

Many thanks

Nick

Hi Nick
If I understand your issue correctly here is the way to do it.

Click on ‘Save for Web’. You might get a message saying that the file is too big for this. If I get this message I just flatten the image and, rarely, reduce the size of it as well.

Once opened in Save for Web, go to the box giving the file dimensions and make the longest side = 850 pixels. Then all you have to do is tweak the quality slider so that the final output size 101 or less.

Hope this is what you needed.

Hi Gordon and thanks for responding.

I don't seem to have 'Save for web' as an option as such, but do have Export, which gives me the options 'Export as' or 'Save for Web (legacy)'.

My version is 25.12.1 under my subscription and I did download a Beta version, but some updates do not take place because I receive a message about compatability due to the fact that I need a processor which supports AVX2 (Advanced Vector Extensions), which I haven't needed to date. It's on my list of things to do now Windows 10 is no longer supported. All my stuff is Windows based, so I don't propose to move to a Mac at my age.

Saving for web is no issue because of the options above, I was more interested to learn your workflow before that stage, i.e.do you start with a high res file and paste into as I mentioned, or do you just copy Steve's image and let PS use that size for the new file? I find working at 300 ppi is better for selections etc.

Re: Posting Images
Just use Save For Web (Legacy). No need to resave or resize – you can do this in the SFW dialog, and adjust the JPG value to make it small enough.

Re: Posting Images
Thanks Steve
Seems I'm using the right dialog box then, so all ok. I think the issue is that my file is 9x6 in, which gives 648 px longest side at 72 ppi and if others are using 850 px, as Gordon suggests, then there's the difference. Your original instruction in the welcome section did suggest 500 - 600 px, so I've stuck around that figure.

Re: Posting Images
Nick, if our images seem large that may because most of us host off sight (I use Flickr) and simply add a live link in HTCP. This way there is little to no limitation in file size, we don't need to compress down to under 120KB and we are not using up significant space on Steve's site.

If this is what you meant let me know and I'll post how to do it.

Hi David and thanks for the offer, but I don't use Flickr, or any other photo site, so I'll just stick with my old plodding Dinosaur way of doing things. After all, the images posted appear to be of sufficient quality for the site. For the next posting I'll do as Gordon suggests and then my pics should be on a par with everyone else in terms of size.

Re: Posting Images
It’s not the pixel size that matters, just the file size. Reduce the JPG setting until it’s small enough.
