Screens, layers and automobiles?
I'm a little confused, in the People and Cars tutorial, how is the integrity of the car's interior preserved (seats, pillars, etc.), am I missing something or is that the 'go the whole mile' version?

Re: Screens, layers and automobiles?
In step 3 it says -

"Cut that windowscreen to a new layer using (Command+Shift+J) (Ctrl+Shift+J), then erase the windows on the side and the back of the car. We also need to darken the car interior, since it was photographed through reflecting glass - but we're going to add our own glass later."

In erasing the windows on the side and back of the car you are left with the silhouette of the interior which is darkened to cancel the glass reflection. Although it would appear at first glance that you are copying the windowscreen you are actually making a layer for the interior from the windowscreen layer, the glass is constructed later at stage 7.

Thanks Maiden. I did miss that.

I think I need to sort my eyes or monitor out, I'm finding it very difficult to isolate bits of the interior from the screen

It does look a little tough to decipher, but I suppose it's a case of artistic license, after all we know what a head-rest looks like so to a certain extent we can fake it.

Exactly. We can fake what isn't there so it looks real.

But seriously, though, if there are any places where I don't make things clear, or where steps seem to have been missed out, do let me know. The publishers have started talking about a third edition, and I need to begin planning it...

After Maiden's insight, I had a go, unfortunately, I didn't keep it. apart from the hasty fuzzyness of the erasing, it didn't look too bad, I even put a light sky reflection on the windscreen.

I think, for that particular tutorial, just an inset of the layer structure would clarify things a little.

I agree, often when I get lost on a tutorial seeing the Layer Palette can be a big help in sorting out what a particular layer is suppose to look like and in what order the layers should be.

Actually, saying that; and I know Steve will cringe but maybe this one could be a video tutorial?

Yes, you're right. I should have done more video tutorials for the second edition, but it's recording the sound that drives me crazy. I had another idea, which was to overlay a text layer on top of the video instead of a spoken soundtrack, and I think that might make them easier to record and more user friendly (you could just pause the video to read the captions through at your leisure).

To be honest, I hadn't realised this tutorial was such a difficult one. I knew the Philosopher's Stone was tricky, and several people have emailed me asking for more explanation - so I'll definitely try to do that one as a vid. So more vids all round, if I can manage it. Taking suggestions now!

'Subtitles' are a great idea, it would also make the filesize smaller. It's strange how different people have trouble with different types of image, I found the Philosopher's Stone quite easy to get my head around, yest, the car drove me mad (pardon the pun).
