Losing the edges

I am having trouble with the section "Losing edges." I have outlines the pixel but do not know the steps to delete them. Can you elaborate on the process (step 5 page 19)?

Re: Losing the edges
Dan,

I'm assuming you're using the file from the CD, I'll take it from the beginning, apologies if I go over things you already know.:

Firstly, you need to make sure the hand layer is selected (left click on the layer's icon, the little paintbrush will appear to the right of the eye.

Now, hold the Control(PC)/Command(Mac) key and left click on the layer's icon, this will select the hand.

Press Control/Command, shift and I or Select Menu>Inverse to invert the selection, the 'marching ants' should now extend to the edges of the image.

Press the delete key or use the Edit menu>Clear.

Press Control/Command+d to clear the selection.

This will remove the white outline but there will still be some black around the edges, if you want to remove more, repeat the process.

Hope this helps.

David

Re: Losing the edges
Thanks for bailing me out here, David, but I have to confess to an error in the original text. What I omitted to say is that you need to contract the selection by 1 pixel before inversing and deleting - and that's what makes the technique work. Cheat? Of course it is! Sorry to put you to so much trouble when it was my mistake originally.

I'm sure you did mention contracting, possibly in another tutorial? It does seem to work without though, possibly due to anti-aliasing, which probably has the equivalent of half a pixel, which, sometimes is enough.
