Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
I've had little luck finding help on this matter with other sites...so I come here. Is there a way to use documents created in Quark with Indesign? I've just started a job with a local newspaper company that designs their spreads solely in Quark. The publisher wants to transition over to Indesign CS2, but if there's no way to use Quark and Indesign interchangeably with documents then there may be no hope for Indesign. Anyone ever have the need to go from Quark to Indesign and back? Thanks in Advance, Chris |

Chris, Open the document in Quark. Save As a Quark 5 document. Then re-Save As a Quark 4 document. Then open in InDesign. It would appear that there is no way to open an Indesign document in Quark..........unless someone out there has discovered a way. This comes from my tame printer chappie. Hope it works. Gordon |

Chris, One thing I forgot to mention. As Quark and InDesign work in different ways things like the leading might not read across so best check through to make sure. Gordon |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
Hi Chris At work I sometimes have to open files in Illustrator that have been created in Quark. The workaround that I use is open the document in Quark and then 'Save Page As Eps'. This allows Illustrator to open and edit the document, so I see no reason why Indesign should not be able to do the same. Of course, you need Quark in the first place. Or demand Quark files that have been saved as eps! Wayne |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
Thanks guys! I think this should be enough to get me started. A big concern, however, is that the other departments will continue to make their spreads using Quark (such as the editorial department). So if I create a layout using Indesign, then the other departments will need to somehow open it using Quark... Also, Wayne, you mentioned exporting the document from Quark as an .eps. Is there a way to export the artwork as an eps and have the text remain editable? Thanks again, Chris |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
Chris, it seems I might have been a little over-optimistic here! When I do this with files for use in Illustrator, I can edit the text (providing I have the font, or it has been sent with the artwork) However, assuming you would be able to do this in Indesign was a mistake. I really do find this surprising! Gordon was quite right, you can open Quark 4 files in Indesign, but I have Quark version 6, and there is no way to save documents as version 4. (I don't know whether you will be able to do this from version 6.5) You would think as software matured it would get more user-friendly, not less! I'm grateful that in my job I encounter quark files pretty infrequenly! Anyway, sorry if I raised false hope. I would be interested to hear if you do find a workaround. Wayne |

Wayne, Yes I believe (don't quote me) that the ability to save to v.4 came with 6.5 but you do have to save to v.5 first. I don't run Quark myself so I can't check it personally. Check it out and see if you can do it from v.6 > v.5 > v.4. |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
I tried that yesterday, but after saving to v 5 and opening the document again, there was no option for saving to v 4. I Can't try anything else now, as I'm not in work until Monday ![]() |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
Wayne and Chris, I have just loaded up my old copy of Quark 6.5 to check it out for myself. I found that you can't save as v.4 but you can save to v.5. I think that you have to then open the v.5 document in Quark5 and then re-save as a v.4 doc. Unfortunately I don't have v.5 on my MAC so can't check this. ![]() |

Re: Quark Express 6.5 with Indesign CS2?
Since our last posts, I have finally found a solution between Quark and Indesign compatibility. There is a program out there ($199.99) that will convert the documents for you. It's kinda funny that you have to purchase the $200 program to convert from Quark to Indesign, and if you want to go from Indesign to Quark...It's another $200 smack for a seperate program to do just that! ![]() http://www.markzware.com/q2id/ |
