Wedding Photo Problems
Hi, My first post so forgive me if the answer to my question has already been posted before! As a wedding gift a friend recently agreed to take the digital photos for us at our wedding and has now supplied me with approx 300 pictures of the event! Horror of horrors though as on the day my wife had the mother of all cold sores appear right in the centre of her bottom lip. I have been playing around with the clone tool in Photoshop in an attempt to try and remove the cold sore along with a few other background items and have had a reasonable amount of success. My questions are: Is this the best way to go about the problem? When saving the image after alteration I can only seem to achieve a file size of approx 4mb whereas the originals are all 5+. Would I notice a significant reduction in reprint quality if I save the image at the lower file size? Any help greatly appreciated. Pete |

Hi Peter. It sounds like the spot healing brush tool is the best way to go but could you post a copy of the photograph for us all to see. Gordon |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
Don't have a problem doing this, although the maximum size for a file attatchment seems to be substantially less than the size of each of my pictures. Will try try anyway! My main concern, however, is whether I will lose quality on a reprint if I modify the file with the Photoshop tool and then save it at a reduced file size? |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
I assume the original files are JPG when you resave what image quality do you use? If the default is 7 or 8 try changing it to between 10 and 12. Also to be sure you don't loose anything important, do save as and rename the file, perhaps by just adding a letter at the end of the filename. Vibeke |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
I would agree with gordon the healing brush would be the best tool, I would also tend to work on a copy of the original file. You could up load a file to photobucket or simular site and post a link here. the link below with give you more detail http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_pro.cgi?fid=02&topic_id=1179677613 |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
OK here goes, I think I have finally got the Photobucket side of things to work! These are the links to a selection of the pictures, the wedding car photo indicating the cold sore that ideally I would like to remove and the others indicating an initial problem with marking on the concrete, along with my initial attempt at removal using the clone tool http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j68/saint12661/2007_0804peteali0037.jpg http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j68/saint12661/2007_0804peteali0101.jpg http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j68/saint12661/2007_0804peteali0102.jpg http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j68/saint12661/2007_0804peteali0102-1.jpg |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
The 0037 photo of the wedding car isn't showing the full photo. I see what you mean about the concrete floor though. What about removing the floor altogether and adding in another concrete floor. |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
Heres a quick edit.
Healing brush and brush in colour mode for the lip and skin underneath Curves tweak to make the contrast a bit more punchy, levels midtone adjustment and shadow highlight to bring the grooms face out of the shade some. The band is due to a bad upload on the original BTW, this happens quite a bit but deleting and re-uploading will solve it. I could have gotten a cleaner image on the full size image, you could try a large file sharing site, (I have used one before for uploading a large RAW file but cannot find the link again sorry, try a google search though and there are a few free ones, you upolad your file then post the link so people can download and edit it then repost or mail etc) If you can get the full size up and posted before the end of the day i'll ake a quick look but i'm stuck for the rest of the week after that. Hope this helps, Mike |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
Would be over the moon if I could do as you suggest with the floor, but I am a total newbie to the world of digital imaging software so at present am just feeling my way around in what appears to be a pretty impressive package. Many thanks for your reply |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
Steve, Thanks for that. Would you have an answer for my question regarding the saving of an altered image? |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
As the file was originally just over 5mb, what do you do after editing with regards to saving the altered image, and if was saved at a lower file size would it affect the quality of the image when it comes to getting prints from Jessops etc? After editing the original file you'd simply save it as highest res jpeg, or Tiff (level 12) and then take it to your print shop Did you shoot the original in RAW? If so the RAW has to be converted to allow print shops to work with it Try something like www.yousendit.com You may have to register as with most but you get a max upload, 1gig i think, when hosted you get an URL which you send to recipients and they can then download it in it's original format |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
I agree with mike when you save or save as the last box is the quality box, make sure this is set to twelve you should be fine. I also tend to save a PSD version as well, this maintains all the layers and adjustment I have made, then if after printing I require an adjustment reopen the PSD version |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
Photoshops native file format, uncompressed so no loss of image quality and retains all layers etc, no good for submission to print etc but good for saving for future edits to individual layers and effects Smaller that Tiff too but can only be read in PS |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
I used the clone stamp sampling from the lip and skin just below the lip. then selected the lips with quick mask and used a hue/saturation ajustment to increase saturation of the lips to pull up the colour. then I copied the layer and use shadow/ highlight adjustment to remove the shadow on the faces, finally I used the crop tool to remove the grey bar at the bottom. All took about 20 mins http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x9/steve_hill_2007/wedding2copy.jpg |

Re: Wedding Photo Problems
A tip for using the clone tool. Create a new empty layer above the photo you want to fix. Use the clone tool on that layer. this way you don't have to worry about making mistakes. ![]() |
