How can I create water ripples
I saw the tutorial on creating water ripples. I've created the rings, transformed them... how do I mkae them look like ripples?

Re: How can I create water ripples
Hi Chris,
There are probably a few different techniques for ripples but the method I used on the Friday Challenge ‘Reflection Exercise’ was to create a series of rings on a separate layer within the working image. These were then aligned and distorted to line up with where I thought they ought to be in perspective. I then deleted all the other layers and saved the file as a psd file with a new name such as “ripples bump map.psd”. Preparing the file this way means that your ripples will fit exactly over your original file.

This layer is then given some Gaussian blur. How much you need is down to experiment , I’m afraid. Start off with a little blur. If that doesn’t work when you distort your image then go back and blur it a little more.

This is your ‘displacement map’ which you will use to distort your image. Now just follow the tutorial in HTCIP for displacement maps. You will now see your image distort so that it looks as though it ought to be rippled but it isn’t easy to discern the ripples so we need a little shading. Open the bump map file again and shift-drag that layer onto the working file. It should be perfectly centred over the newly distorted layer. Lower the transparency and perhaps change the blending mode to, say, overlay to give something that looks about right. Use a layer mask to get rid of anything that ought to be behind something.

You have to do this for each layer that is going to be ‘seen through the ripples’. For example I applied the same settings to the reflected outboard motor, the reflected people and all the reflected animals as well as the boat hull and the “river bed”. Command (Ctrl) – F repeats the filter setting so you don’t have to go through all the nause again and again.

Just keep playing with displacement settings and blending modes until you get what you’re looking for.

Hope all this at least points you in the right direction
