Polishing jewellery - 1
Hi all Sorry, but this example is in three posts. Been asked to polish up some jewellery. This existing shot is the kind of result I'm after. The next two posts show the before and after of the shot I've been working on. Just like some feedback on what everyone thinks of my end result. Much appreciated. Chris ![]() |

it looks a little more on the burnt side. when i look at the first picture I get a feeling that the jewelry is really clean, really elegant and its under some spotlights. so try giving it more light blur the further back parts of the jewelry and soften the end product. good luck! |

Hi srowden - more like this? I don't want to put blur on unless client requests it. ![]() |

Hello Chris, To me the top ring, even in the original looks as if there is a slight kink in it just after the darkest part due to shading, also it is now very difficult to see all of the highly polished part of the top ring. Also burnished gold still has a sheen to it; very tricky but I think you have adjusted the levels on the top ring too much, but it also needs a bit of a kick/highlight somewhere. Lots of also's but hope it helps! |

Chris, If you look at the original pic there are "light bands" of reflected light on the rings. If you can create a gradient for your rings to add these "reflective light bands" I think that will add some "sparkle" to your picture. I'm not at my laptop to try an example. Sorry. Here's a quick example, hope it helps. (It needs refining. I just did it quickly for demo purposes) Neil

I'm by no means an expert on this, but I have been watching what some of the conversations about retouching jewelry have been saying. Some of the things that the experts would look for, is bright shiny metal, and sparkle in the ring of diamonds. Neil, your highlights look cool, but the experts seem to frown on those kind of enhancements. Here's my try, although I don't think that I have totally got it where the experts would want it either. I did this by using a levels adjustment layer to bring up the contrast as a whole, and then adjusted each ring separately with an additional curves layer, one for each ring, masking out the adjustment on the other. I then toned the adjustment down as needed by painting over anywhere it was too strong in the mask. ![]() |

One thing everyone has missed is the background. The image you're trying to replicate is pure white which instantly says clean and fresh; the drab grey would make a Cartier look like it had been found in a bin. By isolating the rings and filling with white the effect is almost instant. It was just a matter of tweaking with Curves and a little Dodge on the diamonds after that. And a reflection, of course. ![]() _________________ Leap and the net will appear |

Blimey - we've opened a right can of worms here. I sent a version to client so I'll wait and see what he says. After all, they are the ones who are always right! Chris |
