saving PS file as a PDF
Been asked by a printer to save a photoshop project as a pdf, so I've saved it as a Photoshop PDF. However, the new file won't save text layers. Do I have to rasterise them first (which I don't want to do) or have I missed something? Chris |

I'm not sure what is going wrong with your Photoshop but I have just tried saving a text layer as a PDF and it worked fine for me - fully scaleable within Acrobat Reader. It might be your setting within the Save Adobe PDF dialogue box - although I can't see anything that would prevent scaleable layered fonts. |

Re: saving PS file as a PDF
Hi Chris I stumbled with this a while ago. although my photoshop skills are very limited i do know a little about .pdf and saving in general. when saving as a photoshop PDF MAKE sure the 'as copy' box is unchecked (if you save any layered file using the as copy function the layers will be ignored during the save). So uncheck the 'as copy' box, make sure the 'layers' box is checked in the save section. Below that you will see the colour preferences, these arent so important during the save but generally i keep the default, which is ICC Profile colours, and the 'use lower case extension' box checked also. When you hit ok, photoshop will then bring up another box giving alot more .PDF specific preferences (particularly if you have acrobat), again unless you have real knowledge or reason to change the defaults i recommend you just click ok and continue. hope that helped you out mate JJ |

Hi Vibeke and Progenic. Vibeke - i think i habe a different version of Photoshop as I don't get the Pereserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities checkbox. Progenic - had all those boxes marked and it dosn't do it. Any other suggestions gratefully accepted, and thanks for taking the time! Chris |

Re: saving PS file as a PDF
hi again chris i have just tried it myself, just made a quick layered image with 2 text layers and saved, and it worked fine. Maybe its because i have acrobat and livecycle designer im not sure really mate. Im guessing you have some setting or preference set slightly wrong deep within the heart of the system somewhere then. sorry i couldnt help JJ |

hi chris when exporting as a PDF from PS i suggest you go to File>Automate>PDf Presentation... there you can browse what files you want to be exported as a single PDF..give it a try |

Re: saving PS file as a PDF
With Photopshop's latest text editing capabilities, I find that I only use Quark for multi-page documents. For a professionally litho-printed job (eg, an A4 ad to appear in a glossy magazine), then in Photoshop of course you are working in CMYK and 300 dpi at actual printed finished size. Have as many layers as you like, including text layers and any vector smart objects. To produce the PDF, first save the Photoshop PSD file as a Photoshop EPS file. It will warn 'save as copy', that's fine, go ahead and save. The resulting file will have a .eps file extension and will be quite large. Then open Acrobat Distiller. Make sure it is set to 'PDF/X-1A 2001'. Drop your EPS file into Distiller. The resulting PDF will be suitable for professional 4-colour litho printing. You can Pre-Flight in Acrobat by selecting 'Magazine Ads'. You will be very smug when you see 'No Problems Found.' |
