image size / quality
In PhotoShop one can save at various levels of JPEG quality. If I have a 2.5 mb picture and save it at the highest quality (12) it will actually save it at 3.4 mb. You can't create details so you just have a bigger file. Using the same 2.5 mb file I can save at low quality (2) and have a 400 kb file. At 300% magnification I can not see any difference in quality on the screen. I am using a 24 in Dell wide screen monitor set to 1600X1024. How can I tell what level (2-12) I should save pictures at to maintain quality, but not make huge files for no gain in quality? (Pictures taken with new Nikon D40X SLR. The biggest I would ever enlarge to is 11x14. A RAW shot is 9 meg and normal JPEG is 2.5 meg. ) Any thoughts? |

Re: image size / quality
If you are printing your image, I'd use the Camera RAW as your source image and then if sending it to a printer that requires a JPEG, save it at 80% or so quality. If you are displaying on the web or on screen only, you can get away with using the camera's JPEG and when using Save for Web, set the quality to around 30% if just making a preview image or 60% if saving the image at full size. As you lower the quality setting, you will start to see digital noise and colour fringing around sharp corners with strong colour contrast. |
