I've scanned 2 photo's of my grandparents & want to replace the head of one photo with the head of the 2nd photo. My problem is they are both old photos, one in pure black/white & the 2nd in maybe 16 colors. I want to replace the head of the 16 color with the head from the black/white. How do i get the color to match? The face was inked out and i'm trying to replace it with a different face.  |

Try using curves, just remember to to make a clipping mask so the adjustment only affects the head layer. Alt Cntrl G. |

Billy, Several steps involved here. First, you need to turn the base picture (the one with all the people in) to grayscale, so the colours don't mess up. You can always tint it later if you want. Then use Curves or Levels to increase the contrast in this picture, as it's very washed out at present. Boost those flagging greys to strengthen them up. Next, use the Shadows/Highlights adjustment to retrieve some of the detail in the white dress. Turn the Shadows setting right down, and increase the Highlights setting until you see some detail in there. When this picture is restored to "full strength", you can then bring in the new head, blend it in and, if necessary, reduce the contrast to match the original. Thanks All, i like that look Michael, did you use the same technique Steve mention? I will give it a try. I've posted the original file that i lasso the head from to give you an ideal of what i'm working with.  |

Hi Billy, I used a combination of curves and tweaking the brightness/contrast. Also a slight amout of noise on the added head combined with some gaussian blur. I had a bit of a chuckle with the ink drawn face. Reminded me of Mr Bean and Whistlers Mother. Ahh, the things we did before Photoshop

Hi Billy, Here's mine, I used similar steps to Steve's suggestion then I concentrated on getting the lighting on the face as close to the original as possible.  |
