Banding problems :(
Hi. I'm working on an image for work. It will print out at 96cm x 64cm at 180dpi. I have my image on photoshop set to this size. I am trying to add some interest to a plain background by adding a contrast/brightness adjustment layer with a gradient mask. I hadn't noticed originally, but further down the line (after flattening several layers due to huge file sizes of 500mb+) when I started to change the colours I could see banding on the background. After going back to previous unflattened saves it turns out that this banding is on my adjustment layer's mask. Even in 16bit/channel mode it is very evident. I thought with a 16 bit grey scale image the differences between each level would be imperceptible to the human eye. I need to make half a dozen variations of my image. The darker coloured ones are fine, but with brighter greens, the banding is showing up on the print. Am I overlooking something very obvious? Is there a way to get a smoother gradient? (I am printing on an Epson 9800) ![]() |

A trick to reduce banding is to add some gaussian noise to the image. It may not look particularly good on-screen but when printed it can sometimes eliminate it completely. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |
