stuck on page 4 - selection fundamental
I'm at wits end here trying to figure out my mistake. I get step 1 and select the outer rim with the ALT pressed down. So now I want to select the inner hub and I hold down the SHIFT key and try to select the inner hub but as soon as I let go the mouse, the selection disappears! The funny thing though is that if I hold down the SHIFT key and select a section OUTSIDE the already selected outer area (ie on the tire itself) then the selection stays. And if I hold and drag my mouse inside one of the selections BOTH selections move together (as can be seen in attachment)

I just want to know how to select both the outer rim and inner hub as displayed in Step 2 and 3.

Also if I hold the ALT key before I select, then I can select the inner hub, but it states that doing this is supposed to take away not add.
So I'm confused.

Hi Jenn,

In step 1 you start drawing and then, while your mouse button is still down you add alt and continue to draw.

In step 2, you press alt and then press the mouse button down. This will instruct photoshop to deselect your new selection from the previous selection. When you look at the cursor, you will see a little minus sign on the lower right corner of the cursor, telling you that you are going to subtract from the selection.

In step 3, you press shift, and the press the mouse button. You should now see a little plus sign on the lower right hand side of the cursor. This will add to your selection. Now you can add the center button back in to your selection.

It's a little hard to see, but take a look at the cursors in the book, and you will see the little plus and minus signs.

Regards,
Dave.

Thank you for such a clear explanation - it worked that way!

I was thinking after STEP 1, that I could just use the SHIFT key alone to (+ add) a selection around the inner rim. So if I understand correctly now, you are saying it is NECESSARY to first use the ALT key (-) to deselect before you can use the SHIFT key (+) to select within another selection.

Re: stuck on page 4 - selection fundamental
For this exercise only, that is correct. This is because, after step one, the entire area inside of your ellipse is already selected. You can't select an area again that is already selected. You can, however, add another selection from anywhere that is not currently selected.

In step 2, you are de-selecting an area inside your current selection.

In step 3, you are re-selecting an area inside of the area that you just de-selected.

If you are still confused, try pressing Q, to see what you have selected . Your selection will appear clear, and the deselected area will turn red. Press Q again to return to normal. "What the Q does, is turn on Quick Mask." For more information on Quick Mask, continue on to the quick mask section in a few pages.

Dave.

I understand this section now thanks to you you made it so clear and that was neat using the Q to see the deselected areas. Really appreciate the help.
