faces made into a movie
I see faces, always have since young. Now 63, it's time to bring in some exciting crativity. I bought Photoshop, the complete program, and want to take photos of granite mountainsides, boulders etc. and to bring the faces I see to life. I want to add just a bit of detail, create a (slide/cell/file?), then add some more, save again, and continue until the face comes 'alive' so that others can see it besides me. Then I want to reverse the flow to have the face 'go back'; then work on another 'face', and then reverse that too, and continue until all the faces I see have been enlivened. I have your book, How to Cheat in Photoshop, have loaded the Photoshop program into my iMac G5. I do not know anything about this process (I'm a PC person but am dedicating this Mac to this and later video movies); and even opening the program to begin to download digital photo images, saving files etc. I could use a very, very basic book on opening Photoshop and saving files. And then working on the above. Is this doable? Best regards Dennis R. Archambault |

Re: faces made into a movie
Hi Dennis, If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you want to create a movie clip that will go from one image, to a face, and then back to the original image. This is called Morphing. You can do this using Photoshop to edit your artwork and some other software such as Afteraffects to help animate it. Photoshop is a good place to start, and HCIP is an excellent way to learn Photoshop. While you are at it, join in to the Friday challenges. They will help you to hone your skills. And the best part, is Steve's review will help you to learn. I learn something with every one that I enter. If you get stuck, or have questions, post them here too. Someone will get back to you with some help. Regards, Dave.Cox |

Thank you Dave! Someone else mentioned that I was talking of "morphing". Yes, my goal is to create one image, then reverse this process 'to make the image go back', and then choose another 'face', bring it out, reverse it, and so on. And then have a montage (movie) of these faces becoming 'obvious' then going back to their 'natural non-face reality'. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I don't see morphing among the subjects in Steve's book, How to Cheat in Photoshop though. Is there a book you could recommend about the very, very basics of Photoshop, as in how to open it, navigate in it, how to create folders for such a montage, how to, how to...Photoshop for Dummies? I have the 'Dummies" Digital SLR Photography with Photoshop CS2 book, but even that presumes one is further along than me. Thank you for replying to my first request. Best regards Dennis |

Dennis, The 'morphing' you want to do can be achieved easily within Photoshop - no real need for a separate application. All you need to do is create transitions between key frames. But we can discuss this later, when you're nearer your goal. I don't know of any good beginners' books, although I'm sure there are plenty out there. My advice would always be just to get going with Photoshop, and ask questions (here, if you like) when you get stuck. Don't feel any question is too trivial: that's what we're here for. Good luck with it! Steve |

Yes, its true, that you can use Photoshop to do the morphing affect. I mentioned Afteraffects because I believe that it offers more tools to make it easier to accomplish Here is an article that you may want to take a look at. http://library.creativecow.net/articles/zwar_chris/morph.php |

After Effects is great, but it is overkill for what Dennis wants to do. And, probably out of his budget. And, he really doesn't need it for what he wants to do. Photoshop can handle it. As I understand it, Dennis isn't wanting to do a Morph from one shape to another, such as the man to sheep example in your link. He wants to take a still photo in which he can visualize a face, enhance it so that the face is clearly visible to others, and then transition from the original to the enhanced and back again in a movie. That's entirely doable in the standard version of Photoshop without any additional tools. |
