Major Color Changes Fourth Edition pages 82 & 83
I think I’m OK up to step eight but when I move the new layer on top of the white layer the whole roof turns grey and I lose the white cross.
There must be something that I’m missing but I don’t know what. I would appreciate any help.

I got stuck on that one initially, too. I'll see if I can remember how I fixed it, and let you know.

Thanks katew I’m really getting frustrated with this one. I’m up to chapter eight in the book but keep coming back to try and sort this one out.

Thanks cy I have looked at Elaine’s post and I can really sympathize with her frustration, unfortunately she doesn’t give the solution to the problem.

Jessie,

Looking at your screenshot, your selection is correct. But, it looks like you duplicated the entire desaturated roof layer and moved it to the top over the white roof. What you need to do is create a new layer from the desaturated roof layer using the selection to cut out the selected pieces. Then, move that to the top.

Do this: delete union jack layer but keep the selection. Select the desaturated roof layer. Ctrl+J to create a new layer using the selection. Label that "Union Jack" and move it to the top over the white layer. You should now have the white cross showing and you can proceed to step 9.

I agree with Bob - you seem to have copied the entire roof and not just the selected area Jessie - like Bob says - Ctrl+j (Cmd+j on the Mac) the Union Jack Layer and then move the copied layer above the White Cross layer or can create a Layer Mask based upon the Union Jack Selection which will hide the rest of the roof.

Bob Maiden thank you so much, I thought I had done as you suggested. Shows what happens when I start thinking. As a punishment we have been without power for the last 24 hours.
Now to get the Red part do I draw on the Red Roof layer?
Thanks again. Jessie.

No, you want to make the white roof layer the active layer and remove sections of it to let the red roof below show through. If the desaturated roof layer is still present between the red roof and the white roof layers, hide it or delete it.

I'd draw the outlines of the red areas with the pen tool, load a selection from the path, and then apply a hide selection layer mask to reveal the red roof layer underneath.

Thanks Bob, I have it now. The desaturated roof layer was the problem.

Hi,

Can you believe I am stuck on this project too... I am gonna turn into a major alcoholic! Wait .... someone must stop me ......
I am totally stuck @ step 10.

"The red portion of the flag ......already beneath it"
"drawing its outlines," is troublesome for me I really don't know what to do there. I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to post a step by step video ... that will be fantastic!! Or step by step instruction for the beyond dumber (raising hand...me mee!! )

Many thanks in advance!

Looks like I'm going to have to do a video of this one on the DVD with the next edition!

not that i much care for the union jack but if anyone could explain how to draw it (and what "drawing outlines" means") then that would be great.

I'd much rather not want to fork out more money for the next edition to find the solution cheers
