Color by Numbers in Photoshop CS2
Can I get help with How to Cheat in Photoshop CS2 here? If I am in the wrong forum, please forgive me. I am having some problems with the color by numbers chapter in How to Cheat in Photoshop CS2. I am stuck after the second step. I have selected the sky and have it looking all orange in my photograph. The next step is to paste in another sky, but when I do, I am not able to resize it. It becomes all chopped up and moves in sections because of the lines of the selection of the old sky. What am I doing wrong? I may mention that I am dragging the new sky into the photo because the "Paste Into" is grayed out and Shift-Ctrl-V doesn't seem to do anything. What step am I omitting? I can send screenshots if my explanation is vauge. |

Re: Color by Numbers in Photoshop CS2
It sounds like you did not copy the other sky before trying to "paste into" the original photo. If there is nothing copied, the option will be grayed out. Try this, bring up the second sky photo and ctrl+a to select the entire photo (or, make a custom selection for the new sky) and then ctrl+c to copy the selected area. Now, switch back to the original photo with its sky selection. You should now be able to "paste into" using ctrl+shift+v. |

Re: Color by Numbers in Photoshop CS2
Hi Tami, Welcome to Steve's site, and yes, this is the correct place. There are 2 things to watch for here. One, select the sky that you are trying to copy in, and copy it to the clip board first. If you want to use the sky layer included in the example, enable the clouds layer, Ctrl/Cmd click the layer, and press Ctrl/Cmd C. This will copy it to the clipboard. Now turn off the eye for this layer to hide it, and press Ctrl/Cmd D to deselect. Next, Select the Background layer. If you do not select the background layer, the paste into function will not be enabled. Now you can select paste into. This creates a new layer, just above the background layer, with a layer mask that you can move around as you need to to align it. |

Re: Color by Numbers in Photoshop CS2
I don't remember how it worked in earlier versions, but I am using CS3 and it works quite happily without selecting the background layer. It inserts the new layer with the mask immediately above the currently selected layer. CS2 may work differently though, I don't remember. I normally paste into from another document, but you can easily do it from within the same document. Just be careful of what you have selected and hide any layers that need it. |

Re: Color by Numbers in Photoshop CS2
I think it depends on where you copy the source from. I am now using CS4, but I think that this still works the same. What I found when I was trying to duplicate the above problem is this. If I copied from the layer included in the example, then I had to select the background layer before the paste function was active. It was not active while the layer that it was copied from was still active. If I copied from another file, then I did not see a problem. Since you have to switch back to the file that you want to paste to, the paste function becomes active in any layer selected. Of course, it may not matter. Tami doesn't seem to have returned. |
