QuickMask 1: Better Selection Step 6-7
I just bought this book and was trying out the quick mask, but I got stuck! I've colored in everything I wish to select in red, but when I press Q to exit quick mask, my intended selection is NOT selected? I see NO marching ants?

Is there something I need to do BEFORE pressing Q, to make my selection stay?

I've already made sure that "red indicates selected areas" so Im not too sure what I might be doing wrong.

Hi TbaZic

A couple things you can check. Double click the quick mask tool on the tool bar to open the quick mask options. Make sure that you have the "Color indicates" area set to "Selected Areas."

If you still have the problem, make sure you are actually painting with the quick mask tool, and not just painting on the layer. Press "D" to set your colors to default. If you are painting with black, then you are not in the quick mask tool. If you are painting with the color set in the quick mask options box, (The default is red), then you are working in quick mask.

Also, set your brush opacity and flow to 100% to be sure you are fully painting the quick mask in.

When you have finished painting in your selection, press Q to turn off Quick mask mode, (Or press the quick mask button in the tool bar), and you should see the marching ants.

Dave.

Good morning Thomas,

Check the brush opacity. If it's set to 49% or less it will paint the mask but when you press 'Q' again the 'marching ants' won't show. They only appear at opacities of 50% or higher.

Something similar happens if you paint the mask with a soft-edged brush when the ants only appear from the 50% opacity edge.
