websites
Not strictly a PS problem but I could do with some advice ...

I want to put a website together but have no html skills - I have previously made a site using Mr Site but am not too impressed with their service (they keep shutting me out of my e-mails for one thing)
Does anyone know of any Mr Site type businesses that they can recommend ?

Re: websites
You could always try SiteGrinder, a Photoshop plug-in that lets you build websites directly from inside Photoshop. Works pretty well!

Re: websites
I think also Google does allow you create a website based upon templates they provide - it's a basic homepage/blog type website though so nothing fancy.

That looks handy - but once I had made it how would I get it on the internet - would I have to pay someone to host it - and would they get my domain name or do I have to do that? Would I upload it to the hoster in the same way as I upload jpegs to here for eg ?
I'm sorry if this is kiddy stuff but my knowledge of IT is very much on a need to know basis and I haven't needed to know before

When you start with a webhost you'll get an FTP address which you log into using an FTP program something like CoffeeCup FTP or CuteFTP etc. there are several free ones. You will have to enter your login details Username and Password as provided to you by the webhost via email . I'm with Streamline.Net who are cheap and reliable. I bought a .co.uk domainname which is about £10 for 2 years again cheap and again via the Streamline website. There are plenty of other hosts out there but I'm sure all of them guide you through the setting up of a website.

Re: websites
Josephine,

I and colleagues & friends use 1&1. Its easy to setup your initial personal web page(s), without any need for html etc experience and you can get free domain name or pay annual fee to get private domain names .net, .com, .info. ( + others e.g. .co.uk )

Maybe not so cheap, $9.99 per month and .com domain name $8.99 per year. Unlimited traffic.

Free trial.

www.1and1.com

Just fyi, I have no preference. Others maybe better value for money.

Re: websites
Josephine,

If you want to get hands a bit dirty you might try free html editor. HTML-kit works for me, freeware, download from http://download.cnet.com/HTML-Kit/3000-10248_4-10035302.html?tag=lst-0-4 . has high recommendations. It works for me when I have time. You can check how your page looks as you happly edit aware, or not!

Again no preference, just fyi. Steve's suggestion maybe more familiar and get the results you want easier.

Re: websites
Hi Josephine,
I am using 123-reg.co.uk. I bought a couple of domain names from them for under £10 for two years. I also bought off them a Site Builder 'wizard'. It is extremely easy to use (otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it!) and it costs £6 per month. For this they also host the site for you. I also have an email address which is the same as the website address: mark@MARKGOODWINPHOTOGRAPHY.COM. The only problem here is that you have to have an email address account with another provider. Mine is with BT. I'm not 100% sure how it works but I think basically, I receive the e-mails via 123-reg and the replies go out via btinternet.com.

My site is not very good as I am still trying to decide which is the best direction for it to go in! Feel free to check it out at www.markgoodwinphotography.com, don't expect too much :0( .

You can also check them out at www.123-reg.co.uk.

Hope this helps a bit.

Learning HTML is fun and very rewarding.

Get Firefox, get the FireBug plug in for it

Goto this link www.w3schools.com

and you'll never look back.

Re: websites
Hi Josephine,

I have a very basic understanding of web design, but having tried Sitegrinder Pro and a slew of other programs & templates - I eventually settled with Joomla for my website and a template purchased from Rocket Theme. Same with my stock photography, but using Ktools Photostore. Invested quite a bit of money for such a simple need. This is the 4th revision of my website, and I'm rather happy with 'most' of the results.

Joomla is a Content Management System and builds pages in a dynamic way - rather than having to create each static html page by hand, Joomla provides a sort of "skin" around the content. It can be a bit involved, but once you get the basic understanding how it works you can create a rather large website in a fairly short amount of time. Joomla is completely free; although, the higher end templates are not.

If it is possible to transfer Registration and Activation on my purchase of Sitegrinder 2 Pro, I would be happy to sell it. Haven't used the plugin for months.

Hope this helps and good luck!
