Matching colors with curves
I am trying to work through the exercise in How to Cheat in Photoshop: Matching colors with curves.

I am using Photoshop CS4

As I make a change on a curve to remove blue from the hand, the color of the face also changes. Is there a way to lock the face so that as I make a color change on the hand, the color stays the same on the face?

thanks in advance.

Hi John
If you create a Curves adjustment layer above the hand layer and 'clip' it to that layer, the adjustment will only affect the layer beneath it. Hold ALT as you place the cursor between the hand layer and the Curves adjustment and you will see a symbol appear. Left click and the Curve Adj will jump to the right.

Good solution, Nick. But that presupposes the hand and face are separate layers.

There are two ways to do this if they're both on the same layer.

Select the hand first. As this is (presumably) a relatively minor adjustment the Quick Selection tool should be up to this job. Then, try running Curves as before. Only the hand will be affected.

Alternatively, make a new Curves Adjustment Layer, and apply the change to that; then paint out everywhere except the hand on the mask that comes with the Adjustment Layer.
