Metallic Text
I need to fit a curved string of text onto a statue.s chest much like
a T-Shirt logo. I have the text prepared in Illustrator but I need to blend it with the contours of the chest and turn it into a metallic gold. It is the bending into the figures contours I'm having a problem with. Currently using CS4 extended. Many thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Metallic Text
Interesting. Can you post a low res of the image you're working on, as well as the text, so we can see more clearly what the issue is?

Re: Metallic Text
Hi Steve, this is my problem I want to place the text as natural as possible on the chest but lacking in the knowledge* to make it look effective. A nice metallic embossed effect would be great if I could find a workaround to achieve this. Cheers Paul * Your book is brilliant, but my lack of available time to study it isn't! Having a problem trying to attach both low res logos. The font is Impact saying "YOUR TEXT OR LOGO curved with "HERE" centred straight underneath the curve.

Hi Paul,

I tried to replicate your idea on the image as posted but the resolution is just too low to show the technique so I’m sorry I cannot illustrate this with your image.

I am assuming that your text is all prepared and ready to go.

Firstly make a copy of the statue layer and drag it to the top of the layer stack. Make sure that it stays at the top throughout; particularly when we get to the ‘displacement bit’.

Now de-saturate that top layer and give it a little Gaussian blur. How much will depend on the size of the image so you’ll have to work that out for yourself. You should be able to see reasonably fine detail but a little blurred. Now hide the layer by clicking on the ‘eye’ icon. Save the file as a psd file.

Position the text where you would like it but do remember that it might be partially hidden by his cloak.

Load the text as a selection and hide the text layer. Select the statue layer (not the blurred version!). Now hit Ctrl-J (CMD-J on a MAC). This will give you a new layer in the shape of your text but using the statue as the fill. You should not be able to see any change but your text layer is there – honest!

Double click on this new text layer to bring up the blending options and select Bevel and Emboss. Select the ‘down’ option and with style, technique, depth, etc to your taste. Hit OK.

Keep this layer active and go to filter>distort>displace. Now you will just have to experiment with settings start off by using the default of ‘10’ and hit OK. Photoshop will now ask you for a displacement map, so navigate to where you have saved this psd file and select that.

What happens now is that Photoshop will look at the topmost layer in this file which, of course, is your blurred, de-saturated image of the statue; the layer doesn’t need to be visible. It will then move the pixels of your letters layer either up and left or down and right depending on the greyscale value of the particular pixel on the blurred image. The blurring smoothes out the tonal range and prevents sudden jumps with the pixels. Your text layer should now ‘conform to the folds of the cloth.

That’s the basic technique; the rest will require a little experimentation on your part to get it right for this particular image.

Hope this helps.

Gordon
