Usually I rely on poke and hope to get a file the approxiamte right size so I have never learned how to do it accurately. The deadline for entries is 4th december _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Can't see it (I've only got save to web - it doesn't mention devices) when I open it up I get original optimised 2 up and 4 up - It doesn't mention optimise to file size _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Josephine This seems to be a strange stipulation from the competition and begs the question whether they are looking for TIFF or JPEG. You would normally be asked for a max file size, or specific dimensions. To give an example, a 12 in X 8 in TIFF at 300 PPI equates to 25 meg approx. Rough rule of thumb = 3600px X 2400px = 8,640,000 px X 3 channels (RGB) 25,920,000, therefore 25.9. A JPEG would have to be considerably larger to achieve this size and much will depend on the make up of the image, i.e. how much of the information is discarded. Clever things JPEGS!. Like you, I do not recall seeing the Optimise option, but I do not have PS here now to refer to. I'd drop them a line, because others will be in the same boat. Nick |

Josephine, Since urgent, small clarification on Becky's feedback, in the Optimize tab window, on top right there is a drop down menu selectable which includes Optimize to file size, which is option Becky is referring to I think. Max size is 2048k though? You can of course use Save File As... and select JPEG, and in the JPEG options window tune the parameters while watching the resulting size incuded in that window. But of course, there are still the fundamental points raised by Nick that should be clarified. Also Colour Profile maybe an issue. In the absence of clarification, maybe, since this is Photo competition, best thing to do is keep camera original image px size to help minimize resizing sampling issues, i.e. to preserve as much of your original image information as possible. If you have RAW, I'd also work with 16bits per channel image, until finally save to JPEG 8 bits per channel. Good luck, Trevor |

"We asked you to compose, shoot and send us a photo that includes "g2" (be it a front cover, or just the letter and digit, as above). The best will appear in a special g2 next month. It'll be worth it, we promise. Email by 4 December to your.pictures@guardian.co.uk, stating your name, age, occupation and where and when it was taken. Please take your photos in landscape format, and send only the best as 15MB jpg files" This is from the website - its sounded barmy to me but what do I know I will e mail as you suggest _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Iam probably being spectacularly dense but I cant find any option in Save for web or Save As which allows you to dictate the file size in MB - can you do a screen cap? _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

| Jota120 Ingenious Inventor Posts: 2615 Reply | Re: Help urgently needed on file sizing! I back checked with CS2. The dropdown menu is there, but slightly different format. Here is CS4 screen shot Josephine. After select it, the size option windo comes up next. According to my understand, only intended to reduce size of a larger image file for web, not to increase i.e. go back to Image option for that, subject to quality issues or use a third party plug-in. |

I have finally got it to 1.49MB and that will have to do - although after all my messing about lord knows what it looks like... Anyway, here is a small version FYI - the competition was to produce an image with "G2" featuring in it - no big prize just the glory of being featured and about a million other entrants so I am not holding my breath _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
