Layer Masks 3: Soft Edges - How to Cheat In Photoshop CS2
P. 56: Direction 3 By following these direction, I can't get a layer mask to look like the black & white images on p. 57. I will try attaching a screen shot. This also affects what I try to do on page 72 & 73, so I can use curves only on the hand and not the whole image. ![]() |

OK, this is fine so far: you've got the layer mask on the fog layer correctly. To make the mask work on the people layer, you first have to load them as a selection. Hold the Command key, and click on their thumbnail (not the mask thumbnail) in the Layers Panel. This loads up their selection, and you'll be able to see the marching ants border. Inverse the selection (command shift I) so that everything except them is selected. Make sure the layer mask is active by clicking on it, then, with black as the foreground colour, use command-delete (backspace) to fill this area with black. You'll see no difference, as the only area that's masked is the area that isn't present on the layer. But when you now use the Smudge tool on the mask, you should be able to smear it in from the edges, making the impression of grass growing over them. Let us know how you get on! Steve |
