RAW files not opening in CS3 or Bridge
I am totally flummoxed! I took loads of pictures today with my Nikon D40X and they are not being recognised in Bridge or Photoshop. Nor are any of my earlier Raw files. However the same files are recognised on my laptop in CS3 and Bridge. Could it be anything to do with the OS? I have a fairly new PC with Windows 7 on it. My laptop has Vista. Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do? Sophie |

The RAW name doesn't apply to a single file format, but is a generic term for the formats produced by all the camera manufacturers. It could be that you just don't have the right camera drivers installed on your main computer. Otherwise, it's probably just Windows messing you around... |

Re: RAW files not opening in CS3 or Bridge
Thanks so much Steve. You pointed me in the right direction. For some reason I thought Photoshop would automatically be able to read these files regardless. I discovered I needed to update the Camera Raw converter file (from 3.?? to 4.1) from Adobe which came with the original CS3 software, a plug-in. It was a bit fiddly to install but clear instructions are on the Adobe website. All is working now. |

Don't feel bad, I have a friend who is a professional photographer and every time she buys a new camera, she phones me in a panic, because she can't see them in Lightroom, after importing them. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

FYI - incase not aware 1)Downloading latest RAW updates 2) Downloading DNG Coverter with latest RAW updates Downloading latest RAW updates You can download RAW Plugin updates from Adope for new latest cameras. I think 5.6 is latest for Mac and Windows. They only provide latest updates for latest ACR/PS CS release i.e. at present CS4. I think you could still get an older updated and install for CS3. Can download from here for Windows CS4. They are free. Alternatively in CS4 can do automatically I think from Help. Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4622 Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4621 Similar locations for other CS version updates, see next for CS3 links. Updates are not backward compatible after a new CS version is released. If Help does not support the update, you have to download and unzip the the plugin and replace your current version (keep copy of old!) in the appropriate Adobe directory! It's worked okay for me when had CS and CS2. The Adobe links give details. Downloading DNG Coverter with latest RAW updates But all is not lost if you do not have CS4 and your latest camera is not support by the plugin. You can download Adobe DNG Converter free. They sort of hide this as I guess want Product Management want you to buy CS latest upgrade, but other departments still want to promote DNG standard. The DNG Converter should support latest RAW plugin. It will convert latest manufactures supported RAW to a DNG RAW. You should be able to that DNG in older versions of CS RAW (ACR) e.g. CS3. A small pain, as another step in the workflow and sort of get duplicate RAW files for images, unless delete one. Adobe DNG Concerter works on batach e.g. with wild cards or all in a directory, so not much of a pain and quite fast. Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4620 Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4619 Having said all this, it might help Vibeke friends, et al, but not sure solves your problem Sophie. Think I got these links correct, but you get the gist hopefully if I did not. Trevor |

Thanks It's usually solved by just telling her to download the latest version of Lightroom. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: RAW files not opening in CS3 or Bridge
Thanks ever so much everyone for all the help and encouragement. I think I will bookmark this page! The final humiliation came late yesterday when Adobe Updater popped up. Among the updates was... the latest RAW version 4.6 as mentioned by Trevor. Thanks very much Trevor for all your useful links and information. I'm drinking a toast to you. |
