CS5 Extended
Hello All, Don't know if anyone can sort this out for me. Today I rang Adobe to see the cost of upgrading to CS5 extended. I then asked if I could buy that upgrade and then at a later date upgrade to Creative Suite Design Standard (which does not have the extended version of Photoshop). Which she said I could. The reason for doing this is cost of course, it would be about £400 cheaper! However, she then said if I did that I would loose the functionality of CS5 Extended. I know I'm not a computer 'expert' by any means, but is this true? If I'm not running them both at the same time, which I wouldn't how would that work? If I wanted to upgrade to CS5 Photoshop (not extended), there was no mention of loosing functionality of CS3. Anyway, this is all a bit moot at the moment, as I haven't got the money! |

Re: CS5 Extended
I can't fully undestand. Why do you want to upgrade to CS5 Extended and then go back to the Standard CS5? Anyway, CS3 Extended has 3D capabilities which CS5 standard doesn't have. If you want to upgrade fron CS3 Standard to CS5 Standard, you have nothing to lose since both don't have the 3D menu. But if you upgraded to CS5 extended and then downgraded to the Standard CS5, you'll lose the 3D capabilities. _________________ I got it. Brain Blast!!! - Jimmy Neutron |

Re: CS5 Extended
Hello, Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. The reason for buying the Creative Suite Design Standard would be to use Illustrator and InDesign. I wouldn't actually use Photoshop CS5 that is in that package, as I would already have purchased the upgrade to the extended version. As I said before it all comes down to cost. |

Oh I see. I'm a bit confused for there are so many upgrade options.
BTW, uhhmm, not sure if its the right place to ask but I can't see your avatar Deborah, i just see a box with the word 'image' on it. Is it just me or everyone can't see your avatar? _________________ I got it. Brain Blast!!! - Jimmy Neutron |

Re: CS5 Extended
I am going through a similar thing at the moment Deborah. I want to upgrade to PS CS5 Extended plus, I also need Illustrator and InDesign. In my conversation with Adobe it concluded that they would let me upgrade to CS Design Suite Standard from PS CS4 and I could pay an extra amount to include the Extended version of PS. However, in future whenever I wished to upgrade, I would have to upgrade the whole package, e.g. I couldn't just upgrade PS to say CS6 or whatever. Sometimes I think Adobe make things so difficult, and in my 'Business Training role', I meet so many young new business start-ups and they all tell me how they download the full suite for nothing, and how it all work so beautifully etc. and they look at me like I'm a mug because I want to honest and true to the product! I am still in a quandary and haven't made my final choice how best to approach the dilemma of what to buy and when! Good luck _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Re: CS5 Extended
I had this problem before where I just wanted to upgrade PS to CS4 even though I had the whole suite. Adobe would not allow me to just upgrade PS. I had to upgrade the whole suite or buy a FULL version of PS. Once you get into a creative suite, there's no turning back. You have to upgrade the whole suite or if you want one program ie: PS or InDesign you have to buy the full version as a separate program. Once you take the hit, it's actually cheaper to have all of the programs, and to upgrade them. It's too bad Adobe isn't more flexible. I think they would do better in sales if they allowed you to upgrade only one program. They make it difficult and wonder why people pirate their software... |

Re: CS5 Extended
Thanks for your input Steve. Just to compound the problem the upgrade for the whole suite in the States is about $400 and in the UK its about $1,200 for exactly the same product. A box and a couple of CD's total manufacturing cost probably about $5! OK I know they have a lot of R&D costs to recoup, but when that is done...Huge profits! Technically its referred to as 'Market Skimming'. Why on earth they can't sell their product for the same price in Europe as they do in the States is beyond me. It appears to be nothing but out and out greed! OK...sorry...Rant over! _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Re: CS5 Extended
There has been some chatter on the photoshop forum that you need to consider carefully before migrating to extended. Some feel it is over priced for the functionality offered. There are other 3D programs out there that are more versatile and cheaper. Just my 2 cents worth. Pricing has also been discussed. Adobe says it is high taxes in Europe and the many different languages they have to offer it in. The argument has some merit, but does not add up the 3X the cost. Curt Y |

Re: CS5 Extended
Another 2 cents' worth: The 3D capability of Photoshop CS5 Extended is astoundingly good. It requires no knowledge of 3D tools and enables us to build 3D objects from flat photographs, from paths, and from painted outlines. I know it's expensive, but I can really recommend it wholeheartedly. |

Re: CS5 Extended
Have bitten the bullet and ordered CS5 Extended. The salesman said I can upgrade to the Creative Suite Standard at a later date (to use InDesign and Illustrator). And at long last I have upgraded to Snow Leopard, touch wood no problems (I do hate to write that), and now have an additional 30GB of space!! |

Re: CS5 Extended
Me too! Well not exactly. But I upgraded to the full CS5 Design Standard Suite, but NOT Extended. I wanted to go for the Extended but I couldn't warrant spending that much extra for something that I may use only occasionally. So now have PS CS5, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat 9 Pro and CS Live. Don't ask me about CS Live I have only just read a little but it sounds like a great tool for sharing your work with clients and colleagues. Make sure you get the latest Snow Leopard update, they did quite a large update, not sure exactly when but I got mine about a month ago. But apparently it was an important one and big. Good luck Deborah, and now for yet another great steeeep learning curve!! _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Re: CS5 Extended
It sounds perfectly logical to me. If you pay full price for the standalone PS CS5 Extended then you get to use that as the extended version you paid for. If you separately bought the Design Suite, you would STILL be able to use your PS CS5 Extended with the original serial number along side the other apps in the suite. Because you want to get a discount on the Design Suite by upgrading from your standalone PS CS5 Extended (in the future) you are using some of the capital you outlaid on the original purchase of PS CS5 Extended. Which is the process that reduces PS to the standard version There is no way around it legally, apart from not upgrading, but buying the Design Suite at full price. |

Re: CS5 Extended
Well, the 3D capability is quite amazing, but I have no idea how to use it! A very basic question, the shapes in 3D are very pixellated. What settings do I need to change/use? |

Re: CS5 Extended
When you say they're pixellated, how are you creating them? Can you give a screenshot? Are you using Repousse? Sounds like you could do with a book that explains it all... |

Re: CS5 Extended
It's not just type, but also shapes. Yes, I am using Repousse. I've tried at 72. 180, and this at 300. It is bound to be something very basic! A book that explains it all - do you know anyone who might have written that? ![]() |

Re: CS5 Extended
Yes, it was very basic. Looked on the Adobe forum and hadn't done the Ray Traced Draft (why did they call it that)? So did that, then went and had a game of Nintendo while I was waiting. Et, voila. Sorry it was such a basic thing! |

Re: CS5 Extended
Deborah, the pixelated look is most likely from the video card/driver. Make sure you have the latest driver installed. Also make sure you have the latest update to CS5 which I think is ll.02 |
