Is there a way of 'blocking' layers?
Its a bit hard to describe, but if for example one has several layers and one wishes to add an adjustment layer to affect say the top layer, without affecting the layers underneath, is there a method for this? Currently, I just go to 'image/adjustments' and sometimes end up doing 2 or 3 effects on the one layer, where I'd prefer really to do them separately. No doubt there is a way, but I have not worked it out. Thanks Jan _________________ “-You can't just turn on creativity like a tap. Hi Jan, Instead of going to Image>Adjustments go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves and select the option 'Use previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask'. Doing this means that your curves adjustment (or Levels or whatever) will only affect the layer immediately beneath it. Should you forget to make that selection and have a 'free standing' adjustment layer that is affecting the entire image then just position the adjustment layer immediately above the layer you wish to affect then position the cursor over the line that divides the two layers in the layers dialogue box, hold down the OPT/ALT key and click on that line. As you do this you will see an eye shaped symbol appear beside the cursor. When you have done this you will also see that the upper layer is indented slightly with a crooked arrow pointing downwards to the next layer. This action will clip the two layers together as above. Hope this helps. If not just ask again. Gordon _________________ Why is there only one word for ‘Thesaurus’? |

Hi Jan You can also select the layer to be adjusted, hold OPT / ALT and keep the mouse depressed on the adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers pallet. Slide the cursor to the adjustment you want and let go of the mouse. A dialogue box will appear and in there is a box 'Use previous layer to create clipping mask' Nick |
