New to photoshop... having a few teething problems
Perspective and shading - in step 6 on page 15 (not got very far yet!), when I press CMD+A to select all, the entire canvas is selected. If I select the ring only, when I press alt+up-arrow to nudge it up, Photoshop creates a copy of the layer each time I nudge... doesn't seem right to me.

Welcome to the forum Robin!

I think your problem might be related to background being opaque white pixels verses transparent i.e. no pixels (chequer-board).

In Steve's books his layer images are set against a white background but only for the purpose of publishing where the layer image has transparent parts. When you press CMD-A, only the defined pixels should be selected i.e. not the transparent no pixels parts. Also make sure you are working and selecting from the correct layer.

So just to check, from step one, when you create the new layer with the ellipse, if you turn-off background layer (eyeball) the displayed image should have checker-board transparent area outside of it.

Not sure this helps, but a first step to hopefully resolve problem.

Hi Trevor,
Thanks... the canvas was white so I'll try again with a transparent canvas.

Cheers

Trevor,

Thanks, that worked OK this time... my finished ring doesn't look quite as slick as Steve's but it's not bad!

Re: New to photoshop... having a few teething problems
Glad you got it to work Robin Many ready on this forum to offer support when have problems and questions, including difficult ones.

By the way, you seem to have duplicate post. We get all get this some times, when post by by mistake.. Steve can delete, or you can go back and hit "edit" and replace your text with e.g. "delete : duplicate".

Re: "Slick": even more Steve goes very fast and accurate with all his key short-cuts
We all learn, improve and if try Friday Challenge, get pushed and challenged at the same time with others.

Noticed the duplicates... will try to edit/replace.
S'funny... I thought I was computer literate until I tried using Photoshop - it must be the least intuitive and most complex piece of software ever compiled... should have stuck to CorelDraw (not for photos though!)

Persist Robin, its worth it. Its not intuitive until you get inside it. For one year it sat on my laptop. My colleagues still do nothing with it. (we are all very computer literate (I think ) )

I got really p**o** with other programs and then after one year invested time learning PS. Paid off.

PS'ers can go very fast with great results when get used to parts you know.

It is safe, and safer (non-destructive) now with likes of e.g. smart objects, but also history there for a while.

There are more than one path to a solution.

Hi,
Finally got there with the wall, it's not perfect but I'm happier now! Here's a small section of it.
Moving on to Sam Spud now...
