Canvas size
I recently bought Steves book 100% photoshop and have started to work through the exercises. But being new to using photoshop in this way i wondered does it make a difference (or matter) what size canvas you start with in Photoshop? Bearing in mind i'm using a venerable version of Photoshop 7. For example if doing 'Setting the Scene - Chapter 2 what size canvas should i open to start with or am I showing my ignorance or just missing something? |

Re: Canvas size
Hi Ray, It doesn't really matter what size you have your canvas for these exercises and it certainly doesn't matter which version of Photoshop you are using insofar as size is concerned. There are, of course, some features in later versions which are not available to you in v7; 'Warp' is one very handy feature that immediately springs to mind. v7, despite its age and lack of certain 'bells and whistles' is still an immensely powerful piece of software. For size of canvas I would pick something around, say, 6x4 inches at 300 dpi (RGB, of course!). This will give a sensible file size to work with on screen and will mean that your file size doesn't balloon too much when you start adding layers ... and it will balloon !! The thing you have to remember, though, is that Photoshop is resolution dependent as it works with pixels. So if you created the above file and thought that you would like to print it to A3 size and frame it on your living room wall it would look pixellated and quite ghastly. So, unlike Illustrator which is a vector programme and can be scaled infinitely, you need to work at the finished resolution. There are other factors to be considered but this should answer your question until you have more experience. Good Photoshopping and hope to see your efforts posted on the site soon. Re: Canvas size
Hi Gordon Thanks very much for the information and adivce it was just what i needed. I think i need to work on my Photoshop basics. I was going to buy one of Steves 'How to Cheat in Photoshop' books which i understand are a good place to learn these but wasn't sure which would be the best one to get as i am using Photoshop 7. Any suggestions. Cheers Ray by the way perhaps your neighbour thought someone was being murdered! |

Re: Canvas size
Hi Ray, I suppose that one of the earlier versions of the book might be best if you can get hold of one as there would be more in the book that would be covered by v7 but they all have exercises that can be covered, at least in part, by v7. _________________ You do not need a parachute to skydive.
