How do they do this?
On looking at some examples of photo restoration repair work, when you drag the mouse pointer across the photo it gradually changes from a before to after of the repair. I think it’s called a rollover and done in Adobe Flash or Dreamweaver. Can anyone tell me how it’s done or refer me to a tutorial or book. Thanks Jessie |

Re: How do they do this?
I think we know a good simple way to do this within PS. Quite simple, but someone else will most likely have better advice than me..... if not more later, but travelling. |

Re: How do they do this?
Jessie, Not really what you want, but very quick and easy in PS. You can Use Blending options with Knockout. Here is method based off Katrin Eismann tutorial some time ago: 1/ Start with a new file with the before layer at the bottom and the new layer at the top, or visa versa depending which you want to knock out. 2/ Select the Shape tool. Make a shape that you want to show the use as the Knock out, eg. a circle. Ensure Shape Layer is active in Options bar. It will create a new Shape layer above the other two. 3/ Select Layer > Style > Blending Options. In Blending Options dialogue box, set fill to 0%, and choice Knockout Shallow. You should then see the bottom layer through the top one with aperture you have chosen. 4/ Use the Move tool to move it around your image. You can style the shape as you wish eg soft edges of add some Style e.g. drop shadow, bevel and emboss. --- Animation Once you have done this, if want to create a dynamic GIF so others can see effect without PS, you you could use PS Animations. For example you could move the shape around the image (as you wish) and save each variation as an Animation Frame, to create a set of frames. Save the file as a GIF using Save for web devices. The new animated gif can then be opened independent of PS to show the resulting animation you created. Of course the limitation is this will not be user interactive. For each new frame you also maybe change the size of the layers to look like it is zooming in on details..... Not sure if you have used PS Animation tool. If not, it can take a bit of time to learn and get used to it. I am sure there are other methods, but this quick and simple, but more only need PS ![]() Hope this help somewhat. Trevor |

Re: How do they do this?
Thanks for the information Trevor. Is the Katrin Eismann’s tutorial you mentioned in one of her books? I have her books on restoration & retouching, and masking & compositing. Jessie |

Yes it is Jessie in M&C. Nothing about my suggestion for Animation of course. Give it a try and adapt ![]() It will be great to see your shared result if you can? Trevor |
