Step and repeat rotation
Hi, I'm on pg. 42 of the book, at step 2, and it's not working. When I press shift and drag it, it wants to align it either vertically or horizontally. But even if I drop it wherever, it just leaves the center marker??? And following step 4 doesn't rectify it....
any help is appreciated
thx,
Steve

Re: Step and repeat rotation
In step 2, you need to hold the alt key, not the shift key, as you drag the centre marker.

In step 4, I think you may be dragging inside the object - which will indeed move it vertically or horizontally. You need to position the cursor outside the Free Transform bounding box in order to rotate it: the cursor icon will change to show rotation.

Does this help? Or have I misunderstood?

Re: Step and repeat rotation
Thx for the reply, Let me try to be more specific, in step 1 I have used the rectangle marquee tool to make a small rectangle, filled it w/blue (shift f5), then cmd t to enter free transform, then I press the alt key, ostensibly to assist in finding the center mark, b/c the rectangle is small, this rectangle is at the 12 o'clock place, and I want to drag it to 1 o' clock. It looks like, in step 3, if you hold the shift (either with or w/out the option/alt key...i'm on a mac) it's supposed to move in 15 degree increments? in any event, even w/out the shift key, as I'm dragging, holding the opt key, it just drags the center mark?? if I hit return it goes away, I'm sure it's something I'm not understanding, I just don't know what.
thanks for any help
Steve

ps. In continuing to work with this it looks like holding the shift down is actual angular rotation to match how the hour markers would be slanted. I was thinking this was achieving the actual spacing BETWEEN the hour markers, I suppose you guess at that? or perhaps i need to read on.

Re: Step and repeat rotation
OK, I think I see the problem. You need to hold alt to drag the centre marker out, and position it as shown.

With the marker in the correct place, release the alt key. Now move the cursor above the blue rectangle and just outside it, and drag to rotate the rectangle around the centre marker. Holding Shift now will constrain it to those 15 degree increments.

Fingers crossed...

Re: Step and repeat rotation
I've got it!! An illustrator friend of mine was visiting, and I had him take a shot at it, he showed me where I went wrong ( basically a comprehension issue on my part). In step 3, where you hold shift as you drag to rotate, you must be on the outside of the rectangle for this to work properly. Sorry it took so long to get back to it, I am in the process of slowly returning to work.
Steve, you do mention that the book is written presuming a working knowledge of Photoshop, that is where I'm falling short, therefore, everything takes me a little longer as a lot of the subjects you cover are (in my opinion) fairly complex. But projects like this help reinforce what is in the text!!
thx
Steve

Re: Step and repeat rotation
Steve,

Much as I'd like to start with the basics, there simply isn't the room to cover Photoshop from the beginning. I'm very limited on pages, so I try to use the space to explain features a lot of Photoshop users don't know, rathe than stuff they're already familiar with. It's a tricky balancing act!

Glad you managed to get this sorted out, though.

Re: Step and repeat rotation
I think the best instructional book out there for photoshop basics would be the book by Lisa Snider King.
Photoshop CS5 , The missing Manual. Progue Press.
I have used her CS4 book, and it is very helpful.
