How to find out, if possible, which filters were used on a flat artwork
I created an effect in Photoshop (CS5) by simply plying with the filters – I remember using a plastic wrap as one of them ( I saved the final file in png format, because it was to be used only for ppt presentation) Now I need to reproduce that effect on a different artwork (label for bubble mailers) and my boss is after me - I am stuck and no matter what I try I can’t get such effect again. Could you please give me a hand and suggest something. I know that I should have kept original psd file, but I didn't think that I might be asked to repeat that effect again.

PLEASE HELP!!!
Thank you very much in advance

Yes think we might be able help. Which is the original and where do you want to go? Its all pixelated on the images you posted after. FX filter can help, but tried it and did not work unless you change the layers you share here.

What would you like to do? Many creative minds here.

Re: How to find out, if possible, which filters were used on a flat artwork
I need to create a similar effect, which I created by aplaying filters to elements that were copied to Photoshop from ai . As I said I never thought I will be asked to do something similar; therefore, neither did I save layered psd version of the file nor made nots of which filters I used and details about them. I tried to attach vector (ai file) version of my starting point, but unfortunately it is too big. I will try JPG for the same to give you idea of what I am trying to accomplish. I need to re-create that kind of 3D effect on black (so I can have in hi res for print purpose) and also I need to be able to apply such or similar effect on several different color combinations, such the the attached blue.

Thank you in advance!!

Re: How to find out, if possible, which filters were used on a flat artwork
Step 1: Create the shapes either on seperate layers if you want. Then merge them into one layer. Make sure it is on a transparent layer.

Step 2: Apply the Plastic Wrap Filter. Depending on the size of the graphic, you will have to try different settings.
The one I used were:
Highlight Strength: 20
Detail: 3
Smoothness: 13

Once done, you should get something that looks like in step 2.

Step 3: Use a soft edge brush with a black color and paint out some of the effect left from the Plastic wrap filter.

Luis,
Thank you very much for your hint. I new it was a plastic wrap, but for some reason I am getting something a bit different using the settings you suggested. I am not achieving that 3D as you did. What do I do wrong? Any idea?

Thanks a million!!!

try this. instead of using the Plastic Wrap filter, use the Bevel & Emboss Layer Style. Using the same size image that you used, this is what I got. No filters were used.

Plastic Wrap behaves differently with large artwork to how it behaves with small artwork. Perhaps you're now trying to achieve the same effect on a much bigger file?

I think Luis is right, and that Layer Styles are a more controllable solution. Splitting the object into multiple layers, as he has done, means you can treat each one independently for more control.

Re: How to find out, if possible, which filters were used on a flat artwork
Hello ,
Thank you very much for your help. Yes Steve, that was the thing - I applied the filter first on a small file and tried to reproduce it on 300dpi 6-7in high file (and that's why I wasn't able to acheve similar effect). Any other idea on how to get that popping effect on the black part of the artwork on a hi res file, which looks pretty cool when applied to a small file. The layer styles produce similar effect, but I like the one that was produced by filter on a small file way better.

One solution would be to apply the effect to a black layer on the small artwork, and then to bring it into the high res artwork and just enlarge the layer, set the mode to Screen so the black disappears, and then Blur as much as is necessary to hide the pixellation. Not an elegant solution, but it should work.

This works way better than layer styles. Many thanks Steve

Now I have another issue. When I apply the same filter, plastic wrap, to the blue elements they look completely different. It seems that plastic wrap does not do as great job on blue as it did on black version. What would you recommend doing to get effect, I was able to achieve on black, on blue or any different color?? I was hoping I will be able to carry your solution through several color versions, but I got stuck again.

Try applying the filter to a layer filled with mid grey (50% black), then change the mode of this layer to Hard Light to hide the grey. Or you could just apply it to a layer filled with black, if that produces the effect you want, and change the mode to Screen.

Jolanta
Photoshop actually provides a way to store the actions you perform:

go to Preferences> General> History Log

there you can choose to save a .txt with detailed information

the result is a raw but useful reminder, especially when you feel like experimenting
