A bug in PS? re Transparent pixel lock on text layers
You don't (as far as I know) need to set the transparency lock on a text layer, you cannot if you try because it's greyed out. But if you have a text layer in a group and then you use Layer->Lock All Layers in Group... and choose transparency lock, it shows the lock on the text layer ! You cannot turn OFF the lock because it's greyed out at the top of the layers panel. I have tried this on both CS5 and CS6 and it's the same. This must be a bug? EDIT: If you go back to Layer->Lock All Layers in Group... and choose All, you can then go to the text layer and click off the overall lock and then you have no locks on that layer, but you can't just click the overall lock on then off again through the layers panel as the transparency lock reappears after you have turned the overall lock off. This can't be right, surely, as it serves no purpose. |

But it doesn't actually have any affect on the text layer. You can still resize or Free Transform it, and make it bigger - thus encroaching on previous transparent areas in that layer. If you Rasterize the text layer, you can still Free Transform it, but if you use the Brush tool on the rasterized layer, it is clipped to the confines of the text. So it seems sensible to me. Bottom line is that when we want to use the text as a shape, we usually leave it intact (we don't rasterize it) and we either clip a new layer to the text layer, or Ctrl Cmd click the text layer to load its selection, and put a layer mask on the layer we want clipped to that shape. _________________ Trevor Dennis www.flickr.com/photos/trevor-dennis/ |

I think you misunderstood my post. Photoshop allows you to set something that you cannot normally set because it's not needed on a text layer, but stops you from Unsetting it because it's greyed out. That has to be a bug. |
