More odd PS behaviour. CS6 & CS5
Here is another odd thing I had discovered. This behaviour may not be limited to what I am doing but it is repeatable in CS6 & CS5 Mac Start off with a new image with a transparent background. Draw a black brush stroke. ![]() Then create a new layer mask with Layer->Layer Mask->From Transparency. ![]() For a start it's changed the transparent pixels to white in the thumbnail, plus it seems to have changed the black ones too. If you hold shift and click on the mask to turn it off you can see the full horror. ![]() I am not trying to do anything so please don't suggest ways around this. I am just pointing out something very odd. |

Yes. I'm finding exactly the same thing. Definitely a bug, I'll log it. |

Re: More odd PS behaviour. CS6 & CS5
The same happens in the Windows versions of CS5 and CS6 both 32 and 64 bits. Solution: Ctrl»click on object (load the object as a selection). Click on the Vector-layer icon (see screenphoto). But I suppose you knew that already... ![]() ![]() |

Here's another example. Smoothing Layer masks - Steve's book "Howe to cheat in CS5" » Page 75 » Point 6. -Lowering the Density on a MaskFromTransparency- Both in CS5 and CS6. ![]() |

This is effectively the same bug. I've told Adobe about it, and they got terribly excited! They'd never seen it before. |

Should I be using Layer masks?, not really sure what they do, When something hurts my brain I tend to not use it! ![]() _________________ Quote of the day.. "Photoshop isn't really meant to be used for drawing".. |

Really? You don't use layer masks? That seems impossible, given the standard of your work. Shame you missed my recent Retouch Pro show on, er, Layer Masks! |

Only comment on Masks Do use Layer Masks Artwel and I wish you could have seen Steve's Retouch Pro recommending for his presentation skills. It just takes a bit of time to learn. It is one of the hearts of PS. I think like Gordon I would recommend Katrin Eismann's Masking & Compositing book. Its PS7 level, but all the principles are still here and then with later versions of CS e.g. 5 you can push so much further with less effort and faster! More: Steve's presentation would have given much more than that I think, but sorry at the time I could not make it or critique.. ![]() Agree with Steve's comment |

I love how CS6 uses less memory, but it hangs when ever I go to use the wand, and occasionally for brushes. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: More odd PS behaviour. CS6 & CS5
I love for instance the CS6 option of Ctrl»J >>> Ctrl»E for more than one Layer. I use a Dutch CS5 Extended and CS6 on a PC with Windows 7, both 64 bits. And CS5 Extended 32 bits (for my old plugins). I only once had trouble in CS6: suddenly I got the Help dialog on my screen and couldn't get out of it (didn't hit F1). It reminded me to save my work more often, because I lost 3 hours of work even though 'Save Recovery Information Every 10 Minutes' was checked. Sometimes I use an English version of CS6 Extended ('portable' and not very stable) at 32 bits. See picture of my use of memory for CS6-UK-32bits. For a smooth environment maybe it could be important to use more than 3.5 MB RAM (as I use 8MB for CS6-64bits) or maybe the kind of processor (more than one kernal) could be significant. If I should work on an older system (like Windows XP 32bits) I'd rather use CS3 or an earlier version of Photoshop. I haven't yet dicovered the benefit of the new CS6-option Layer mask from Transparency, it could be the one Ctrl»click less on the Layer icon before making a Mask. To Artwel: At first I thought you were making a joke about not using masks. Of course one could use Photoshop without them, but it seems to me there's no way back after a foult, when making a selection. Maybe you use Quickmask all the time? Or/and do you save your selections to a Channel as was the case in Photoshop 4.0 and before? ![]() |

No don't use layer masks, I'm not sure what they are even for, something I should learn. I tend to just duplicate bits of layers over and over until I end up with a huge file size... to be honest I'm not even sure what I'm doing ![]() _________________ Quote of the day.. Re: More odd PS behaviour. CS6 & CS5
Artwel, I believe there's no "wrong" way to use Photoshop, and your results speak for themselves. However, I do think you're causing yourself a hell of a lot of extra work by not using Layer Masks. At the risk of sounding mercenary, have you read How to Cheat in Photoshop? Only I do cover Layer Masks in some detail in the book, and you might find it useful. |

Yes, that part of the book is VERY useful. I never understood layer masks before, although I read about them in other books, but I could never seem to get the hang of using them. Now I don't know how I ever managed without using them! |
