Wrap text like a word processor
I feel rather embarrassed to ask how to do such a simple task. But I spent a frustrating hour or so this week trying to add some text to a photo (simulation of a magazine cover). Try as I did, I couldn’t get the paragraph of text to wrap like a word processor but instead got one long line of text. If I tried to force the next line by hitting a carriage return it just expanded the text box off the screen. Things I tried included; pasting the text from MS Word, typing long hand, drawing the text box holder before starting and looking at the vast options for text properties but none suggested what I needed. If any gurus out there could help it would be appreciated, I am sure it must be something simple. Thanks

Rather than just clicking with the Type tool, click and drag to draw a text box at the size you want it. Everything you type will now be constrained to fit within the box.

While using the type tool, you can move it over the corner and side handles to change the size of the box.

Thanks very much for your prompt reply Steve. Yes, that’s how I would expect it to work however for me, for some reason it not doing that. I don’t know if at some point I have inadvertently changed some defaults? The attached image shows the text box complete with selection handles however you can only see the first two words of the text when actually there is a full sentence. Very strange!

Ah - I see. I suspect your leading is set to a very high figure, which is pushing the second line of text out of the bottom of the text box. Try setting it back to Auto.

Fantastic! It was set at 4486.69 for some reason. You don’t know how much stress that was causing me the other day. I knew it would be simple in then end and that’s why it was all the more frustrating. THANKS

It's also worth noting that the character and paragraph styles are kept from one session to the next. It's worth resetting them from their respective panels to make sure you don't end up with odd settings.

Make it a HABIT to ALWAYS open the Characters window after starting the Text tool!
