The right manner about Undo
Couldn't find it in the Search, didn't know which term (avoiding layer jump?)

Hypothesize you've been editing on a Layer in Photoshop, say Layer 10.
After this you go to Layer 1 and start to edit this Layer.
Arghh! Immediate you make a mistake. No problem: Ctrl»Z
But now (as a punishment) Photoshop places you back to Layer 10, as if clicking on Layer 1 already wasn't according to Photoshop's likings

My question: Is there a nice, simple trick to avoid this behaviour? Untill now I never read about this symptom.

Thanks in advance!

Re: The right manner about Undo
I think I know what you mean Sjef, yes that is one of those little annoyances in photoshop I noticed it only does it when you ctrl>alt>Z.
Perhaps it would be equally annoying if it didn't revert to the previous layer?, at least when it does revert back you know that you have correctly undone everything on the new layer.

I usually duplicate my layer with every alteration, it's more like O.C.D habit I guess!
Perhaps there is a solution.

As far as I know there's no trick to avoid this behaviour. Yes, it is sometimes irritating, but you can see the point: when you Undo, Photoshop takes you back to the layer you were working on previously because it "assumes" you want to carry on with that layer.

Once you know it's going to do this, you can check for it. But there have still been dozens of times I've found myself painting on the wrong layer for just this reason.

Me too! Perhaps a little note to Adobe?

Re: The right manner about Undo
Hi Artwel, Steve and GKB

I was too quick with my question, I meant indeed Ctrl»Alt»Z and not Ctrl»Z. I dug a bit deeper into this 'problem' and it seems to be partly my own fault. My sneaked in habit is to use the History panel by clicking on the previous action to cancle. I should have mensioned this in my question. It's just the Ctrl»Z that gives the answer I think now. Using always Ctrl»Z, at least the LAST action is canceled without leaving the working Layer. So Ctrl»Z is a 'plaster on the wound' which is, that you always have to keep in mind that when MORE then one action is canceled, you could end up working on the wrong Layer. So your conclusions are right and this is something the Photoshopper has to live with.

I also hit upon the fact that Ctrl»Z can also be handy as a jumping tool. After you went back in history with Layers several times (using Ctrl»Alt»Z only to check or to show things) you can jump back to your working Layer with Ctrl»Z.

Another compensation is this fact: after an Alt»click on the Eye of a Layer we can work on this Layer with the rest of the Layers hidden. Luckely Adobe 'remembers' which Layers and Groups were on or off when we Alt»click again. Even if we used Ctrl»Z.

I only just realised a couple of weeks ago that Alt>and clicking on a layer eye can hide all other layers.
It is one of those things I should have known but now use constantly! Phew!

...and a Ctrl-click on an object brings you to the right layer in the Layer palet (if 'V' was hit first and no Groups were made). I use this option a lot too, even with groups. Not to mension the new Layer search options in CS6.
